Wow! What an experience. I will be honest and say I had no doubt I would finish the Kerrville Triathlon 70.3 distance. It was just a matter of how long would it take. I was not far off predictions. Either way, it was my first 70.3 and I PR’d. ;) Targeted 6.5 - 7 hours. Hit 7.5. Not bad considering. The swim used to be a concern for me. But with all the training I have done with my Tri coach Joanna and the Life Time Tri team, I am much more comfortable with the open water swim. Likewise, my wetsuit training made it that much better since the event turned out to be wetsuit legal.
My training with Joanna on Tuesday and Saturday morning spin class where a huge part of preparing for the bike. Regarding the run, I did pretty well up until mile 10 when I started cramping. At mike 11 I felt better but continued with some cramping. Fortunately I was able to finish the run without too much cramping.
I want to say thanks to my Tri coach and team members who stuck around and were following the updates on Facebook. It really means a lot to have such a huge show of support from family and friends.
I cannot go without saying thanks to my wife Mary for being so supportive and being there with me taking pics and driving me home after starting our day before the crack of dawn and making it home about 12 hours later.
The Kerrville Triathlon was such a great and memorable experience for my first successful 70.3 triathlon. I must give a shout out to the High Five Event staff and volunteers who were a huge part of making it so memorable for both triathletes and spectators. The race was very well organized from the expo to the festival area, including support, aid, and facilities.
Now for a little rest and recovery before hitting it again to prep for Waco on Oct 28th.
