Initially, I wasn’t drawn to the Dakotas. They weren’t on the list, part of the route. But plans change, and we found ourselves hurtling east through Wyoming, the Dakotas directly in our sites. And now I get it. I understand how they imprinted themselves on Theodore Roosevelt — among others — and tilted his view ever westward. There are landscapes here that only exist in dreams, and I’m hopeful they’ll inhabit mine often.

Just read about T.R.’s first trip to the badlands to hunt buffalo the other day in The Rise Of Roosevelt, which is great by the way.
