Lee County Sheriff’s Office Press Release: Toddler ingests marijuana; caregiver arrested.
Shortly after noon on Sunday, September 2, 2018, deputies were dispatched to HealthPark Medical Center in response to a Department of Children and Families complaint.
Deputies were notified, by the D.C.F. Investigator, that a 13-month-old toddler had been drug-screened with a positive result. The child had been found unresponsive and was transported to the hospital.
Following an interview with the caregiver, it was determined that the child consumed an unknown amount of marijuana that had been left unattended on September 1, 2018.
It was discovered, through investigation, that the caregiver, Kearston Ann Long (B/F DOB 10/16/1993), left the marijuana within reach of the child. Long was napping at the time of the incident. Long awoke to find the child’s face covered with the drug.
Despite this realization, Long elected not to seek medical assistance for the child but rather waited until the following day when the toddler become unresponsive. Upon contact with Emergency Medical Services, Long failed to disclose that the child had ingested marijuana.
Kearston Long was arrested and charged with two counts of child neglect.
The child is reportedly doing well at this time.
