It was impossible to get sleep before our summit push. We knew that going in though. Everyone we passed on the way up warned us of the 75mph gusts and freezing temps. We actually thought of camping at lower elevation but we wanted to make our summit attempt as easy as possible. We took extra effort when staking in our tents and weighing down the anchors. That didn't stop the constant intense flapping and sounds of shuffling gravel ALL night. By midnight we were all wide awake and already gearing up.
.
The plan was to make it to the summit for sunrise. By the time we started it was 1245am. We based our pace on a friends hike a few weeks prior. If things went as planned we'd get there just in time.
.
Although we expected the winds and freezing temps, I don't think any of us expected how brutal the hike would actually be. It was blistering cold making it impossible to take a break without shivering violently. Breaks were kept to a minimum consisting of an occasional quick bite and trying to get any warmth to my hands.
.
It was such a mental game. Use painful searing hands to hold trekking poles to keep my balance or tuck my hands in my jacket to prevent frostbite but risk a gust of wind throwing me off a switchback. I told myself to ignore the hands.
.
Literally the whole time I cycled between telling myself to focus on taking deliberate steps and to stop mentally complaining... "Alpinists do this all the time... It's temporary... Shut up... Keep walking..."
.
We ended up summiting at 515. Wayyyyy earlier than expected! As awesome as that sounds, it also meant another hour before any sun/warmth. So here's a photo of our summit experience. Despite dozing in and out of sleep, the stories of adventures, TLC, and shared suffering made the morning truly special. So thankful for everyone who was there!

Physical training is one thing, but this was the most mentally taxing thing I've ever done. Huge thanks to @allissathompson @caroline_raftery and @suzetty for being so badass and helping me push my limits. I can't help but think of what next. Whats the next level physical AND mental challenge?!?
