    How do the strawberries compare to those in Japan? Compared to the US, Japan’s strawberries were so much sweeter and more delicious. Too bad they were pretty expensive, even in season.

    @curiouslanguage It depends on the variety. Gariguettes are my absolute favorite strawberries anywhere. Mara des bois is my second favorite. The problem with strawberries in the US is that they are often shipped very long distances, and also before they are ripe. We live in a strawberry growing area so we’re lucky to get locally grown ones picked when they are fully ripe. The reason why many strawberries, or other fruits for that matter, are expensive is that they are shipped when ripe, and packages carefully. The market is there for such fruit. The US market is generally not willing to pay good money for peak condition produce.

    Incidentally, these weird looking strawberries are what are called “categorie II”, produce that isn’t quite perfect, but is still fresh and tasty. Local farmers’ markets as well as growers themselves sell a lot of Categorie II produce at good prices. It’s one of the perks of living here.
