Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is when a fetus is exposed to drugs while the mother is pregnant and when the baby is born, they begin withdrawing. These babies are often times inconsolable and need to constantly be held to be comforted. Depending on the type of drug they are withdrawing from, they can have tremors, higher pitched cries, irritability, failure to thrive, excessive and ineffective sucking, seizures, hyperactive reflexes, unstable temperature... etc.
This is a heart breaking problem, but it can be prevented.
