Instagram post by @agirlnamedleney Leney

one of my resolutions for the year was to build and maintain a compost heap and before the first month of the year was over i'd built one! it might be silly but i felt *so* much pride and accomplishment in building this with my own two hands. (though thanks is due to my Dad for his guidance in how to properly cut the wood, help me with the math in regards to how much hardware cloth to get *math has never been my strong suit* and letting me use his post hole digger)
β€’
i am hoping to plant my very first garden this year as well. i've grown various things in pots around my home and on balconies in various apartments in The Fan, but now that i actually have something more in the way of a yard i am all geared up to expand my #plantmamadiaries ways in growing my own food. β€’
any tips/advice/encouragement in the way of gardening and composting is much appreciated! it's been a part of my slow living mindset to learn more over this past year and i'm so excited to start. 🌱

    Way to go, Leney! Now you just need a chicken or two πŸ”πŸ” My grandma has always had an amazing garden and she swears that eggshells are the secret.

    Yaaaaaaass!! Compost is life to so many plants! Proud of you for doing that on your ownπŸŒΏπŸ… next time you're in Richmond let's get drinks and talk gardening :)

    @agirlnamedleney you’re ~supposed~ to first plant your seeds inside in march/april then plant them april/may/june but after several seasons of trial and error this last spring/summer i finally just tried to plant the seeds directly into the ground around april bc all my seedlings would just die as soon as i planted them even though i slowly introduced them to outside air, sun, water, etc

    Look into the keyhole gardens; they spiral around a compost pile core & you just water the center. Way fewer weeds, better moisture retention, & better yield if you face enough sun!

    @agirlnamedleney I envy that lol! I'm working on myself which means getting out of my comfort zone more, taking more classes, and doing adventures alone (well with a toddler). I think they start classes as early as this weekend if you are interested!

  • 50w ago highdesertdreamer highdesertdreamer

    That is so awesome! You should be proud 😊 We have been composting for years, growing organically in our greenhouse and gardens. I’m still always amazed at how it breaks down and turns into beautiful soil, food for our plants πŸ’š Way to go! πŸ™Œ

    @agirlnamedleney it’s a black turning one, I got @ellwoodsrva like 5 years ago...it’s broken and I can’t turn it, but it’s working out fine...

  • 50w ago mysticsister__ mysticsister__

    I just started my own compost pile too! But I bought a $35 thing off amazon instead of making my own lol

    @agirlnamedleney do you read/ listen to Gretchen Rubin? She always says done let perfect be the enemy of good and I have been trying to internalize that a lot lately!

  • 50w ago petreydishcom petreydishcom

    My version of compost pile is to toss it into my garden area. It feels good knowing it's not going into a 2ft chalk lined hole.

  • 49w ago agirlnamedleney agirlnamedleney

    @frenchiewashere thank you Dawn!

  • 49w ago agirlnamedleney agirlnamedleney

    @mysticsister__ hey whatever it takes to get you to do it right? i have friends who love that kind! i just wanted something bigger and something that would be reusable if this experimental version didn't work!

  • 49w ago agirlnamedleney agirlnamedleney

    @becca_boots actually reading her book The Four Tendencies now!

  • 49w ago mysticsister__ mysticsister__

    @agirlnamedleney yeah that makes sense. I actually love the one I got. My neighbors suggested it. It expands out to 4 ft by 4 ft so it’s plenty big for my backyard garden. Yay for us new composters!
