The practice of Yoga offers us an extremely concentrated experience of duality, and the opportunity to find balance between opposing, yet complimentary forces. Asana and Pranayama are collectively referred to as Hatha Yoga – literally “the union of the Sun and the Moon” – the Sun representing the active, masculine force and the Moon symbolizing the passive, feminine quality. Throughout the practice of Hatha Yoga, we encounter constant duality – the inhale and the exhale, extension and flexion, right side and left side, mind and body, effort and surrender, etc. Throughout all of the changing circumstances we encounter during practice, we are challenged to be stable yet comfortable and exercise intelligent effort coupled with appropriate surrender. Patanjali, author of the Yoga Sutras, suggests that if we are able to cultivate these skills, “Tatah dvanda anabhighathah” – then we are no longer disturbed by duality. In this class we will explore the myriad manifestations of duality that the practice of Asana and Pranayama provide for us and learn how we can begin to harmonize these forces to create balance. Central to this process is the conscious use of breath to link body and mind, facilitate more stability and receptivity and move with greater ease and intelligence. We will explore the notion of “Reciprocal Inhibition” – the complimentary actions of opposing muscles to provide both greater strength and flexibility and the importance of the interplay of pose/counterpose. In addition, we will learn the practical application of Mula Bandha and Uddhiyana Bandha to develop both Roots and Wings in our Asana and Pranayama practice.
