HELP! ✨// I'm adding a few flexible seating options in my high school classroom this year. What are some helpful tips, rules, and expectations that you set for your kids?

I have only been in a class with flexible seating and it drove me nuts! Lol but I also thought it was an amazing tool to use too. I have been told and heard you need to set expectations and be clear from day 1! I think this teacher also had some type of daily or weekly rotation where each kid would get a chance to change the type of seating. Not sure what type of seating you have, but this teacher had exercise balls, stools, bean bag chairs, etc. I found this article that is basic but super easy to adapt! https://oboyleenglish11.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/flexible-seating-expectations.pdf

Check out the teal paper clip. She has a wonderful blog. I'm doing flexible seating too in the high school and she is the only one I found that was good and relatable!

@beannicole0814 yes I'm all about being clear and setting my expectations on the first day! So that's why I'm over here scrambling to get all my seating options by this Monday 😂😅 I usually have about 30 kids in each class and have to keep all my desks due to state testing. So I'm just going to do a hybrid of flexible seating by swapping out half of my traditional seats with stools. Within the first few days I'll probably do a survey to see which seating option the student prefers! Then I'll adjust and let go a little more as the year goes on. But thank you so much for the site! It's definitely a good start for basic expectations 😊

I am trying to do a blend of both desks and flexible seating options too. I let them choose seats the first day so I could see where they gravitated. My couch, however, has been reserved to when we start VIP seating. The kids know that will be a reward. They stay in their seats for a week (that works for my smaller classes) but my large classes of 28-30 some kids prefer the desks. I wasn't really sure how it would work for middle school either but my kids LOVE it! And so far it has been great. I could use advice too though because I want to slowly incorporate more flexible seating options and still maintain consistency.

@misscraftymathteacher I understand completely! Good luck! I know that document was basic, but I had know doubt you'd put your awesome touch on it lol Would you be able to update us with what you decided once school starts! Good luck to you girl!

I'm in the same boat! I had some flexible seating at the very end of the year and it wasn't an issue, but with my new students i need some expectations. Please share what you develop. I'd be happy to collaborate!

@maralouiseee read her blog - love it! Definitely a good read on flexible seating. Have you started school yet?!

@mooreinmiddle yessss to everything you said! 🙌🏻 I'm planning on getting a futon also for VIP as a reward system! What flexible seating options do you currently have? I only bought two different types of stools so far. But I will definitely get back to you on how flexible seating goes in my classroom!

@misscraftymathteacher no not until after Labor Day. I just made a rules for flexible seating sign though that I love! I'll send you a pic and of my classroom.

I LOVE FLEXIBLE SEATING!!! I have it in my classroom and it has gone off without a hitch! I have a chart listing my expectations (short and sweet) and they know that if they're not using it correctly, they'll be "grounded" and will sit in a chair.

@misscraftymathteacher I have several floor cushions and they use little IKEA tables (pack of two from amazon for $40) and this is their favorite spot by far. I have three big rugs down so floor cushions work well. And then I have a bench that I made out of a bookcase. My goal is to incorporate a tall table and stools next. I have 6th graders though so they love sitting on the floor lol. But high schoolers would probably like a floor option too ☺️ your kids will love a VIP futon!

@amberjohns1 good to hear that you love it! Don't think my kiddos will take grounding very well 😂 So if they do not use the seats correctly, then I'll just simply swap it out with a normal chair! P.S. hope all is well and have a great school year! 😊⚓️

@mooreinmiddle nice! saw pics of your room and I love it! 😍 Sad news - today I found out our principal is not allowing couches/futons in our rooms. So I'm just going to get a pair of comfy chairs for my VIP area instead!
