@bengill198799 @fab_nessah @marissa_hem @allie.hannah.hanke many departments chose to not put vests on their dogs for the reason that Kevlar is heavy and encumbers a dog's ability to maneuver quickly and jump. Kevlar material is not breathable and hinders the dog's ability to stay as cool as possible while working. A vest also increases the chance that a dog can get caught on an object or stuck in a tight space. Many vests do not provide adequate coverage of the neck or face, and ones that do even more so limit the movement of the dog.

@workingdogsofig thanks for the info as I genuinely had no idea. It does make sense but seems sad they are so out in the open.

  • 4w ago workingdogsofig workingdogsofig

@marissa_hem this was most likely taken during a practice scenario/exercise. Usually there won't be a photographer this close to any situation where special units are involved and dogs are kept behind protection until or if deployed.

@workingdogsofig ah of course. Thats pretty obvious but it didn't cross my mindπŸ˜„. Love working dogs, so intelligent. I just pray they all go into retirement and not PTS after their working life.

@marissa_hem I've heard that a lot of the handlers adopt them out, but idk how true that is. That German shepherd is HUGE!!! I love him!!

@marissa_hem actually, many police dogs wear armour. Dogs don't have sweat glands so wearing armour doesn't add much heat retention. Most good k9 armour covers the vital areas of the dog, and though head and neck areas aren't covered, neither are they on the human officers (almost all ballistic helmets do not provide adequate protection against handgun rounds).

@mark_yager thanks Mark, iv three dogs, one being a huskyXGS, HUGE powerful dogs, its all very interesting to know thanks.

  • 4w ago carter.antebi carter.antebi

How come they've got a k9 with showdog hips?

  • 4w ago nielleluvzu nielleluvzu

@carter.antebi probably American bred, which might be the show dog hips you're seeing boxy and the butt is more of a square as opposed to German bred which is more of a sloped hind legs you see more of... don't know why though lol

  • 4w ago carter.antebi carter.antebi

@nielleluvzu idk, you'd think for a working dog's job, they'd use a dog with working dog genetics

  • 4w ago nielleluvzu nielleluvzu

@carter.antebi they're just as capable and are still working dogs. Just different breeding...ive had both...i don't know exactly what would decide which one they go with, contracts with breeders, liter dates. As far as I know they are both equally at risk for normal shep. Problems

  • 4w ago mellani111 mellani111

    😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍

  • 4w ago zdyogi zdyogi

@carter.antebi they're still the same breeds? German shepherds, malinois, dobermans, etc. They're all working breeds no matter the fact that some dogs will look different than others within their same breed. It's just like humans lol we don't all look alike.

  • 4w ago carter.antebi carter.antebi

@zdyogi they're the same breed but there's so much variation in German Shepherds as far as bone structure and personality goes. Do some research on East vs West German vs American vs Czec vs show. There's a reason you don't see the show dogs with the sloped backs that can barely walk competing it Schutzhund and French Ring.
