Looking bedraggled and tired. I'm sorry for the lack of update, it's just been a rather crazy 24 hours...I warn you this is a long post!
Yesterday the vet told us he thought Otto may have meningitis which floored us. We spoke to our amazing breeders who drove a long way to us this morning as another possibility we and they believed was possible was a deep ear canal infection as Otto will not let anyone pluck his ears. So our lovely breeders who do this day and day out said they'd drive over and try plucking his ears to see if he had an infection.
He wouldn't let them near his ears and even bit Jay who is the biggest animal lover ever! This isn't Otto, he's never shown any aggression in his life but he was hysterical screeching. This strengthened our thoughts that it was an inner ear infection so we went the vets straight after who checked and said although his ears are hairy, after looking deep inside there is 100% no infection. The little bugger didn't even flinch as the vet inserted the metal thing into his ear!
The vet then said after speaking to the neurologist hospital to check for meningitis, they don't accept our insurance company so we'd have to pay it outright first and it could be around £4k just for the tests. Our insurance only covers up to £4k per year.... We have no idea if that's even the right route to take!
We have therefore agreed to have further testing which includes lymes disease, lung worm, autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and if all comes back ok we will likely seek a second opinion and try steroids which is the treatment for meningitis. The only issue is, if it is an infection, taking steroids may complicate things further.
Otto has moments when he seems alert and more like himself and today, the shaking is practically non-existent (we're on day 4 of 10 on antibiotics). We're all going out of our minds with worry, mums barely eaten or slept.
All of this combined with it being the 1 year anniversary of them losing their old dog Bo on 15th April last year is just making it that bit harder to deal with but he's a strong puppy, he has to pull through 💔💕
