Without a place to live, wild species cannot survive. Right now, habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation threaten 80 percent of species at risk. ⠀

On #GivingTuesdayCa, help make Ontario a safe haven for wild species and double your impact!⠀

An important find for us yesterday! 🐍 This adult male gray ratsnake was found by our conservation staff in Norfolk County and measures approx. 1.5 metres in length.
.
.
This is the second gray ratsnake we have spotted and captured this summer during our research in Norfolk County in partnership with Natural Resource Solutions Inc..He joins our female capture, dubbed 'Hope,' and will be implanted, like her, with a radio telemetry transmitter.
.
.
By tracking these snakes, and as we are able to add more snakes to our project, we will be better able to understand the seasonal movements and habitat/tree preferences of this sub-population.
.
.
#FastFact: The gray ratsnake is a species at risk in Ontario. Road mortality is one of its biggest threats. This male snake was actually found basking on a roadway!

#FieldFinds: Massassauga rattlesnake spotted while conducting field work on one of our nature reserves this #summer.🐍☀️⠀

#FastFact: Massasaugas are generally associated with water. They are rarely found more than 50 kilometres from the Great Lakes, and often inhabit wetlands near rivers.⠀

In Ojibwa, the word “massasauga” means “great river mouth.”⠀

We're heading back to court this week to speak up for our wild pollinators, along with @davidsuzukifdn, @wildernews & @foe_canada!⠀
.
The government and three multinational pesticide companies are asking the court to dismiss our lawsuit to protect #pollinators from two widely-used neonicotinoid pesticides before it is heard.
.
We're not giving up.
