I usually fill my smoothies with all the green things but today I just felt like a sweet fruity treat. Plus the figs are falling off the tree in our front yard faster than we can eat them. I'm pretty sensitive to sugar, even the natural kind, so I offset my strawberry, fig & cauliflower smoothie with a TON of fat & protein to help balance it out and keep me fuller for longer.

I added coconut cream, hemp hearts, flax seeds, and collagen powder (the only 'protein powder' I use). Blended with homemade almond milk (recipe on #ohbabynutrition), then topped with tahini & shredded coconut.

The process of weaning can make you feel like crap and it's something that most women don't realize. Even if weaning is gradual and baby-led, the hormonal shift that takes place when breastfeeding ends can be very intense. Often just a reduction in the frequency of nursing is enough to bring on symptoms.

It goes beyond the emotional aspect. Bliss inducing oxytocin, the feel-good hormone, is released when we breastfeed. To stop receiving regular doses could feel like coming off a drug… the love drug.

She slept through the night for the first time last week. It only happened once and since then she's been teething, so she's up often and sleep has been scarce.

There are a million different ways to parent, which is both exciting and terrifying. I'm no expert in sleep and it can be overwhelming at times, knowing the 'right thing' to do. Especially when you're feeling sleep deprived. But like with all things in motherhood, I've tried to follow my intuition and do what feels right in my heart. Which for me has meant always comforting her when she cries, both day & night.

My son is now 3yrs and sleeps soundly through the night. Which reminds me that the years are short, even though the nights can feel long. So I'll gladly wake up and breath in my baby's sweet milky breath while she's still a baby.

Eating dates in the final month of pregnancy has been shown to reduce the likelihood of an artificially induced labor because of their ability to aid in cervical ripening & dilation. However, dates can raise blood sugar quickly so they're best balanced with protein & healthy fat to slow the spike. Just like these pregnancy bliss balls!
A recipe from In The Glow:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1 cup dates
1 cup pecans
1/3 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
1 tbsp cacao powder
1 tbsp water
1 tsp coconut oil
¼ tsp cinnamon
pinch of salt
pinch of cayenne powder
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Soak dates & pecans in water for 1 hour. Drain & add to a blender with the rest of the ingredients. Blend until well combined and a dough is formed. Add 1-2 tbsp of water if mixture is too dry. Roll dough into balls & refrigerate for 30 minutes.

A friend recently asked me a bit of a funny question... if it was normal to have stronger body odour after having a baby.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I assured her - yes! - and for so many reasons. The first being hormones. Changing levels in your postpartum body play a role in how you smell. It's also not hard to work up a sweat in the mama hustle.... diaper changes, cleaning up spills, rocking babies to sleep. Plus there's less time for self care as a new mother, so it's not uncommon to skip showers more frequently or forget to put on deodorant.

But beyond all of that, I believe being a muskier mama serves a biological purpose too. Before a baby's sense of sight is developed, they rely on their sense of smell. So having a stronger scent can actually help your baby recognize and become comforted by you natural scent. At the risk of sounding overly crunchy, this is exactly why I encourage new mothers to hold off on perfume, scented soaps & lotions in those early newborn days. #ohbabypostpartum

Packing a healthy, well-balanced meal for your little one’s lunch box helps them stay alert & focused throughout the day. Processed foods with sugar & refined grains (like bread, noodles, crackers) spike blood sugar, which affects both concentration & behavior.

The key is to focus on whole foods and include:
• plenty of healthy fat to boost brain power
• protein to balance blood sugar
• unprocessed carbs (ex: baked yams, winter squash, sprouted quinoa) to provide steady energy
• with lots of colorful veg & fruit

My son’s lunch: grilled asparagus, apple & almond butter (use sunflower or tahini for nut-free schools), and quinoa salad with roasted red pepper & raisins.
