Today, we celebrate an individual who lived the very definition of compassion. In these tragic times, we must recall Nelson Mandela and his perseverance to achieve a better life for his community and the world at large by any means necessary. May we never forget. #nelsonmandela #everonward #theworkisnotdone #nelsonmandeladay

Our final day in Kumasi was spent in Kumawu where we were welcomed by the NYU Center for Technology and Economic Development. We had a lecture on the challenges and solutions to agriculture as an economic activity by Professor Yaw Nyarko, who flew from Abu Dhabi to meet with us. After our session with him, we were able to explore the Market Place app and the drones to see first hand how modern technology is used for farming in rural Ghana. Following, we were grateful to have a visit with the paramount Chief at the Kumawu Palace where we learned about the history of the name Kumase and the Asante Kingdom. We ended our eventful day with lessons by the Kumawu Palace Troupe who demonstrated traditional Ashanti instruments and dance. #nyu #nyuaccra #nyuglobalprograms #studyabroad #kumasi #kumase #asante #ashanti #kumawu #tradtionaldance #ashantikingdom #culturaltroupe

Day 2 in Kumasi. We started off our day at Bonwere where we received a Kente Weaving Demonstration before heading to Ntonsu where we received another first hand lesson on Adrinkra symbols from Wofa Angel Gabriel who inherited this practice from the generation before him. Lastly, we observed a Traditional Goldsmith Workshop led by the Chief who makes pieces exclusively for the Asantehene.

Students from the Colonialism and African Literature Course, joined by Creative Writing Course, both taught by Kofi Anyidoho visited the late poet Kofi Awoonor’s home. Joined by his son, students were able to gain insight on Awoonor’s life, learn some of his inspiration behind his poetry and even take a small tour of his compound.
