“Habits allow us to not think about what we’re doing . . . giving us the illusion of ease. When we are under the illusion of ease, not thinking about what we’re doing, breathing the same old way, moving the same old way, thinking the same old way, we check out of the present, out of happiness itself.” -Alex Levin ✨

My biggest resolution this year (besides travel) is to commit to mindfulness. I’ve started making several small changes to my daily routine to help me stay more aware of my actions and their outcomes. Daily meditation, daily journaling, and paying attention to what I eat have been the most helpful new habits. It turns out my body actually feels best on a predominantly plant based diet. Who knew?! 😅 I was surprised to discover things I thought my body handled just fine (like cheese!!) actually made me feel less good once I really started paying attention. ✨

The app I’ve been using to track my food is called @caloriewiz- I love it because it’s super easy to use- you just select your foods and it does the rest. It gives the option to use it for weight loss but you don’t have to if that’s not what you need. I also love that it shows me how much protein and other nutrients I’m getting- it’s been so helpful while I’m making these changes to my diet!🍴 I really encourage anyone who hasn’t tried keeping a food journal and cutting out inflammatory foods to give it a try. I think it’s such an important part of mindfulness because food is just so powerful!!! Everything you put into your body is either healing or harming you, so it’s so important to make mindful choices 💗✨

"Strength doesn't come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn't." ✨

My last day in Chile I spent the day in Santiago. I had the best time waking around the city and seeing the sites-beautiful buildings everywhere, so many trees and parks, and the most incredible street art!! (see my story!) Then we got to the Plaza de Armas- the main town square with beautiful old buildings. I took my phone out of my bag to take a photo of the cathedral and as I was taking it, some guy ran up behind me, grabbed my phone out of my hands, and started running away with it.
I chased him down the street screaming at him to stop. Luckily it was a really busy street so other people started to notice what was happening, and he only got about half a block before a group of guys tackled him and got my phone back.
People were saying it was a shame to end the trip on that note but I disagree. There are people who do shitty things everywhere, but there are far more people who are kind. So thankful for the kind strangers who risked their own safety to help me. And most of all, I’m happy that I didn’t let fear paralyze me and that I stood up for myself- I’m not sure I would have been able to do that before. I really feel so much stronger and more powerful after all my experiences in Chile! If I can find my breath in my wheel pose on the edge of a cliff when it’s cold and windy, I can do pretty much anything 💗 |

The things that challenge you strengthen you ✨

Spending the past week in Atacama has been absolutely incredible- so much fun and so many beautiful places filled with amazing challenges. We were waking up well before the sun, shooting until well after it set, and sleeping way less than I’m used to. I had to learn to find my yoga no matter where I was or what was going on around me- freezing cold, wind strong enough to knock you down, rocky surfaces, high places, etc.- all things that at one point would have made me want to give up- but this time was different. I looked each of these challenges in the face and decided they weren’t going to stop me. 💪💗 I found so much inspiration in @tomjacobi and his incredible talent and in @kathfrei and how much passion and hard work they put into bringing this vision to life. And of course @andrew7sealy who is always an unstoppable bright light 💫 They made me want to bring out the best in myself and helped me realize that I can do so much more than I ever imagined. 🙏

Tom and Kathi even gave me a new nickname- ATG: All-terrain girl!! There’s a German word (I think it’s “geländegängig?”) for someone who can walk on all surfaces, or someone who can handle all kinds of environments and situations. It’s by far my favorite compliment I’ve ever received ☺️ I’m just so happy grateful to be part of this team, and so excited about what we’ve created 😊💗 📷: @andrew7sealy 🙏

"Change is not something that we should fear. Rather, it is something that we should welcome. For without change, nothing in this world would ever grow or blossom, and no one in this world would ever move forward to become the person they're meant to be."

“When the breath is irregular, the mind wavers; when the breath is steady, so is the mind. As long as there is breath within the body, there is life. When breath departs, life also departs. Therefore, regulate the breath.” -Hatha Yoga Pradipika ✨

It’s amazing how profoundly healing it can be to simply take a few deep breaths. 💫

When we take shallow breaths, we’re using the respiratory muscles around our neck and throat. But when we breathe deeply, we’re using our diaphragm and the muscles around our abdomen. This allows our neck and throat to relax, which allows the muscles of our face to relax, which begins to reduce the tension on our brain. So by slowing down our breath, we’re physically calming our body, enabling us to slow down our thoughts and become still, relaxed, and present. 💗

This beautiful necklace by @komusodesign is such a wonderfully helpful tool to start connecting with your breath. It looks a bit like a whistle but instead of blowing into it, you take a deep inhale through it. Then as you exhale through it, it slows down your breathing to help bring you back into a relaxed state. Of course, you don’t need anything special in order to connect with your breath, but for me this little necklace has been such a wonderful training tool as I continue to work on cultivating mindfulness.
I’m grateful that in the moments I feel stressed, overwhelmed, or nervous, I can reach for this necklace and it brings me back to my breath. 💗🙏 📹: @calistreetshots 💫

Nothing is permanent ✨
Not gonna lie, it’s been bumming me out to start a new year feeling a little under the weather. But as with any time that happens, I have a newfound appreciation for how absolutely incredible it is to feel GOOD and healthy and without pain- it’s hard to believe I ever took such an amazing thing for granted. Anyways, I’m happy to let my body and mind rest for a few days because I know this year is going to be the best yet!!! Heading back to LA tomorrow and then to Chile in a few days, which will he my first time in South America!!! 😀 Then heading to Belize later this month! 😊🙌 That’s all I have planned so far but my goal is to make this whole year one of travel, exploration, and growth. 2018 is going to be such a great year for so many of us... I can feel it! ☺️💗 .

“There is a big difference between giving up and letting go. Giving up means selling yourself short. It means allowing fear and struggle to limit your opportunities and keep you stuck. Letting go means freeing yourself from something that is no longer serving you. Giving up reduces your life. Letting go expands it. Giving up is imprisoning. Letting go is liberation. Giving up is self-defeat. Letting go is self-care.” -Daniell Koepke
