Recently, my artistic practice has included writing short stories as a connective layer to my visual/studio art practice (scroll through to see more). Author Ray Bradbury and the intuitive style in which he records his visceral narratives using a series of one word/phrase cues to draw up unconscious meaning from the deep well of life experience has greatly informed the way that I explore making my work.

My short story, featured here, was inspired by an installation piece that I made in 2014 called "Dandelion Wine: The Time Machine" (this work is referenced in the last two images). It often takes years to fully digest a meaningful experience, and these short stories illustrate just how integrally this digestion affects the development of identity. It takes a lifetime.

@ocac_edu recently released "Julia.Jean", which is a literary journal featuring poems, short stories, and musings from the talented artists at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. I am thankful to have been included in the Spring 2018 edition. If you visit the OCAC campus, be sure to pick up a copy. Thank you for viewing my friends. 😊 #ocac #oregoncollegeofartandcraft #juliajean #journal #shortstories #raybradbury #narrative #storytelling #unconsciousassociations #timemachine #thankful #haveawonderfulday

Mugshot Mondays: Enjoying some delicious @goldentipsindia 's 2018 "Spring Wonder" First Flush Darjeeling Oolong tea infused in my beautiful Jingdezhen porcelain "Sky Blue" celadon gaiwan, and served in my wonderful @denongtea Jingdezhen porcelain cha bei (tea cup)! This tea is very smooth with lite vegetal notes that transition to fruity undertones. Very pleasant.

Time to get the week started. Happy Monday all! #mugshotmondays #mugshotmonday #goldentips #india #springwonder #darjeeling #blacktea #firstflush #oolongtea #meileaf #jingdezhen #porcelain #skyblue #celadon #gaiwan #denong #chabei #teacup #gongfucha #teawares #teaculture #teatime #happymondayall

Mugshot Mondays: Today's feature is of my beautiful 150 ml (5 ounce) volume @mei_leaf "Sky Blue" Jingdezhen Porcelain Gaiwan and @unytea.store 's Jasmine-scented "Da Ye" Green Tea!
I do not often drink jasmine-scented teas, but the lingering and nuanced flavor of this tea is extremely balanced and persists for 4-6 infusions before beginning to fade. Even after the initial 4-6 infusions, the high quality of the leaf provides you with an additional 2-3 infusions of delicious and nuanced vegetal and floral green tea flavor notes to enjoy.
This balanced sweetness is the product of the even and constant heating/scenting process that the leaves undergo with jasmine flowers under a controlled temperature for several days.
My parameters for brewing this tea usually consist of using 175°F (79°C) degree water to 4 grams of leaf per 120 ml (4 ounces) volume of water with infusion times of 5-10 seconds.
The flavor notes consist of lite-roasted brazil nuts, jasmine lactone/flower essence, and rose water. The mouth-feel consists of a beautifully balanced slight-astringency and pleasant puckering sensation akin to grapefruit that fades to airy sweetness with little to no astringency.
It's delicious! Highly recommended. 😊 Happy Monday all! #mugshotmondays #mugshotmonday #meileaf #skybluegaiwan #UNYtea #jasminedaye #scented #tea #cha #teatime #teaculture #ceramics #ceramicsculture #teaware #gongfucha #happymondayall

Mugshot Mondays: Today's feature is of my 130 ml (4 ounce) volume "Jin Hei Gang" Clay Xi Shi Style Yixing Teapot from @yunnan_sourcing ! Yixing teapots date back to the 15th century in China. "Jin Hei Gang" clay is a combination of two Yixing clays: Zisha and Zhu Ni clay.

Zisha means "purple-sand clay" and is purple/red/brown in color. Wares made from it have excellent heat retention while still maintaining breathability to help preserve the aromatics of a tea. Due to the high porosity of this clay, the teas infused in it absorb into its pores, causing it to build more intense flavors after numerous infusions.
Zhu Ni means "cinnabar-sand clay". This stoneware has very high iron content, which gives it a red/brown color. Zhu Ni clay tends to be kiln-fired at lower temperatures, which helps it to maintain much higher porosity. This causes the clay to breath extremely well and preserve the aroma and fragrance of teas brewed in it. This increased breathability produces smoother flavors. It also absorbs the flavors of teas brewed in it, increasing in flavor intensity over time through use. There are currently 10 mines still producing Zhu Ni clay. However, due to the increasing demand for Yixing stoneware, Zhu Ni wares are available in very limited quantities, and are almost commercially extinct.
So as not to confuse flavor profiles from multiple teas, most Yixing teapots are seasoned with one type of tea. This teapot has been dedicated to sheng/raw puerh. Combining these two Yixing clays has produced a teapot that makes very balanced and delicious tea. Thank you for viewing my friends! Cuisine in Yunnan, China (scroll through the videos and images to see more): Experiencing the traditional foods of the Dai and Hani people was truly one of the highlights from my trip to Yunnan. Everything tasted so fresh and was always robust with rich flavors. Our group even learned a bit about cooking these traditional dishes along the way; often sharing in the preparation of meals.

I will always remember the hospitality and kindness of these exchanges at mealtime amongst our hosts, the Dai and Hani, and the visiting artists from The Netherlands, Japan, China, America, and Taiwan. Wonderful memories to cherish.

Have a wonderful weekend my friends! #sanbaostudio #xishuangbanna #yunnan #china #dai #hani #food #china #cooking #friendship #culturalexchanges #thankful #haveawonderfulweekend

Mugshot Mondays: Today's mugshot is of a beautifully crafted Dai tea set that includes a gaiwan (lidded tea infusion vessel), cha pan (tea boat), hand-slipped/carved gong dao bei (fairness pitcher), and cha bei (tea cup). These wonderful pieces were utilized in many of the tea sessions our group enjoyed during my time in Yunnan, China.

Pictured on the upper left, my friend and masterful potter, Jiao Feung is implementing a Dai Gaiwan to serve some delicious sheng puerh tea in beautiful Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China. The bottom photo depicts the beauty of San Mai Mountain, where if you are quiet, you can feel the breath of nature in conjunction with your own.

Another beautiful experience included meeting my friend Tea Master Liu, with whom we enjoyed a delicious Jing Mai Mountain compressed dragon ball sheng puerh tea (pictured in the upper right corner). It was one of the smoothest and most astringently balanced teas that I have ever had. Our days always allowed time for tea, and we would often take turns serving one another so that everyone could enjoy the rewarding exchanges fully.

My friends, I wish you a wonderful week. Happy Monday all! #mugshotmondays #mugshotmonday #xishuangbanna #yunnan #china #gaiwan #chapan #gongdaobei #chabei #sanmaimountain #jingmaimountain #sheng #puerh #teatime #teaculture #gongfucha #exchanges #haveawonderfulweek #happymondayall

So thrilled to be exhibiting my "Fossilized Memories" wall-hanging sculpture in the @oregonpotters Association / Hokkaido Pottery Society "Cultural Exchange" exhibition at the Ebetsu Ceramic Center in Hokkaido, Japan this October!

This exhibition is related to the "Rooted In Clay: Ceramics Of The Pacific Northwest" exhibition occurring at the @sapporoartmuseum from June 22nd to July 16th in Sapporo, Japan. Thankful that my "Rock and Crag Ware" wood-fired Teabowl (pictured in the last image) was accepted in this exciting cross-cultural exhibition amongst other works made by many talented artists as well!

Mugshot Mondays: Today's featured piece is a Dai Clay gaiwan made by the artisans of the Bagongshawan Dai Pottery in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, China.
This little 90 ml (3 ounce) capacity steeper was the infusing vessel for our group's sheng/raw puerh tea sessions during breakfast time just about everyday. It is wheel-thrown, hand-slipped/carved, and then gas fired to cone 6 (2232°F/1222°C).
