Captured this beauty today in Puntland, Somalia 💜🇸🇴🙏🏾I still can't believe I'm finally back home! I lived here a few years ago for close to a year with my family and it was unequivocally the most life changing experience! I always dreamed of the day that we would once again reunite but never imagined it would be under these devastating circumstances. As you all may know by now, the Somali people are experiencing a severe drought with the possibility of a famine looming over their heads. About 6.2 million lives are at risk and close to 444,000 people are now displaced from their homes searching for food and water. Early numbers are showing an increasing number of children suffering from severe acute malnutrition, cholera, and watery diarrhea - a combination that killed around 130,000 children in 2011, half before the famine was even declared. Currently I'm in Puntland, Somalia working with the Anisa, Minister of Women's development/Family affairs and Vice President Abdihakin Abdullahi Omar. At this moment the main focus is providing relief to forgotten and hard to reach rural villages, some of which are inaccessible to humanitarian partners. Today we visited 4 newly formed IDP camps that had people who lost all of their livestock, along with 2 other villages with similar situations. Both having received little to no aid and some on their 4rth-5th day with no food or water. Their stories are haunting but what shocks me even more is the unwavering strength, resilience, and faith the Somali people are displaying despite their suffering. It's unlike anything I've ever seen and has motivated us all to not give up and try even harder to help in preventing this famine. I'll continue posting and sharing more updates.
