American artist Childe Hassam was born on this day in 1859. Known for painting landscapes, Childe Hassam turned to painting female nudes after 1900. “Nude Seated” (1912) shows an artist's model, with her back to us, simply posed to display to the best advantage the effects of light filtering across her skin and hair.

People are conspicuously absent in this farm scene by Grant Wood, titled “Haying” (1939). But the water jug placed at the bottom of the painting beckons you, the viewer, into the maze of hay. Which way would you turn? 🌾

This weekend, we collaborated with @smithsonian on “Morning at the Museum,” a before-hours program where families are invited to experience the museum in a sensory-friendly way. Participants left hearts near their favorite works of art, like this one by Roger de la Fresnaye’s 1913 “The Watering Can (Emblems: The Garden).” #myngadc #sensoryfriendly #heartsforart

“Nuestra Señora de Las Iguanas” (1979, Corcoran Collection) was taken by Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide while she spent time in the town of Juchitán, Mexico. This striking photo depicts Zobeida, one of the women of Juchitán. Zobeida confidently wears a crown of iguanas on her head in the marketplace, where she sold the lizards. The artist made a series depicting the Zapotec women who are indigenous to the Oaxaca region. 🦎
This photograph is frequently reproduced in Juchitán, serving as a visual signifier of the dominant role that women hold in the society. Iturbide’s work focuses on Mexico, its people, and the interplay between indigenous communities—who maintain distinct traditions—and the Hispanic communities whose traditions are more prominently recognized and celebrated. 🦎

“The idea is to represent an effect of light in the wood toward sundown but to allow the imagination to predominate,” George Inness wrote of his painting “Sunset in the Woods” (1891). Inness embraced a sense of mystery in his art. Where does Inness’s style and subject lead your imagination?
