Online violence against women is a reflection of the discrimination and violence that they face in person. A UNFPA survey last year showed that 33 percent of Indonesian women aged 15 to 64 years old experienced physical and/or sexual violence. At the same time, 88 million (34 percent) of Indonesians are active social media users, and 41 percent of all Facebook users in Indonesia are women. Analysis from other parts of the world shows that being active in online political conversations subjects women to significantly higher levels of abuse than men. As part of its #NotTheCost campaign to stop violence against politically-active women, this week NDI brought together Indonesian civic tech and women’s rights organizations in Jakarta to map how online violence against women manifests and to discuss ways to prevent it from excluding women from politics. In this photo, participants wave their hands to say "yes" to peace and "no" to violence.
