Dormice have to carry out very important 'whisk' assessments to help them navigate at night.
Dr Robyn Grant, a researcher from Manchester Metropolitan University, explains how their supersensitive whiskers help them 'see' in the dark.

A poignant image for #WorldRhinoDay: last year's @NHM_WPY winner Brent Stirton captured the cruelty and tragedy of the trade in rhino horn in his work. After being slaughtered in huge numbers for their horns, these mammals are left fighting to survive.
Sudan, pictured here, was the last remaining male northern white rhino until his death earlier this year.

Follow our bio link for more on this sad story and what's being done to fight for these animals: http://bit.ly/NHM_WorldRhinoDay

The Museum's blue whale died over 130 years ago when it stranded off the western coast of Ireland, and was first put on display at the Museum in 1934.

But now scientists have been using cutting-edge technology to piece together the last seven years of the whale's life, tracking where she lived, how she migrated, and even revealing that she had a calf in the year before her tragic death.

Bats are perhaps one of the most well known cave dwelling creatures. Some caves have as many as 20 million bats in residence, and our bat cave in #LifeInTheDark recreates what that might be like!

Lurking in the shadows, there are a wealth of creatures known as troglofauna that are adapted to living in caves. These range from venomous remipedes that use hairs and antennae to detect prey, to blind cave fish and even a select group of elephants in Africa who visit caves to get their sodium intake from the rock.
