Same body, same tights, different look. I get frustrated by all the perfect gym and workout bodies out there in the insta-world. We all have bodies and we should all love them, rather than being ashamed by them.

I have excess skin. I’m in my mid-forties. I’ve been pregnant 3 times and this is my body. I’ll be totally honest, it’s only in the last few years that I have come to accept this strong, capable body as mine and gratitude has been instrumental in my shift in perspective. Rather than constantly berating myself for not looking like a supermodel I look in the mirror and I’m grateful for my strong legs that carried all my kids around for years. I’m thankful for my wrinkles because they’re evidence that I’ve laughed a lot.

I guess the point of this is to remind you that you’re perfect just the way you are, not in comparison to someone else.

That’s friend’s kids get out of school for the summer in 9 minutes. Ok, fine . . . I’m asking for me. I’m not ready for summer. It’s too early. In fact, I’m all for year-round school. I know the teachers don’t agree but I’m okay being selfish on this one.

Connection.

I’m reminded over and over of our basic need to connect. And this connection reminds me that we are all in the same boat. We all suffer, experience sadness, self doubt, fear and pain; It’s the human condition. But we’re not supposed to experience those things in silence, alone. Our suffering is lightened when we share it, talk about it, and expose it.

I’m grateful for people who share the burden with me, without judgment, because they too have experienced their own fair share of pain and suffering. .

There’s no competition when it comes to hardship. My hard is hard and your hard is hard. No one gets to claim the right to own it. But let’s share it and make it easier. Let’s connect and find solace and support. Without judgment.

Summer means good food. I am so grateful to be living back in the states again to get full access to summer fruit. Mostly, I’m thankful for the peaches that make my margaritas taste delectable.

Your body uses carbohydrates, fats and proteins for fuel. In order for your body to function properly you need to make sure that the foundations of health are supported with a nutrient-dense, whole food diet. The foundations include digestion, blood sugar balancing, fatty acids, minerals and hydration.

Your carb consumption should consist of low glycemic vegetables, whole fruits and occasional starchy carbs like sweet potatoes. Fats should include organic raw and soaked seeds, cold-pressed oils like flax and sesame and saturated fats from pasture-raised animals. Proteins should include grass-fed animals, free-range poultry, low toxicity seafood and whole-fat, raw dairy (if you can tolerate it).

This kid. This spirited, tender-hearted, complicated, beautiful soul “graduated” from elementary school today and is moving into middle school next year. .

You guys know me, you know I’m not overly sentimental about school concerts and performances and such, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t tear up when my kid looked back at me with a side eye and a smirk on his face during the ceremony after the principal read the “presidential” address to the kids from Donald Trump.

So today I’m grateful for a full heart, compassion, my son, our connection and his rockin’ sense of style. Gratitude. Today and everyday.

Did you know that our bodies create 100 hormones? Did you know that hormones are responsible for the chemical composition and volume of extracellular fluid; metabolism and energy balance; circadian rhythms; glandular secretions; and a whole lot more?

Here’s the thing, your body cannot make hormones without good quality fats. So you need to be eating fats from grass fed meat (to the extent that you can), coconut oil, avocado oil and good quality fish oil. All of these oils are broken down into fatty acids in your digestive tract and then are the building blocks of hormones. If you’re on a low-fat diet you’re compromising your health and doing a disservice to your body.

Oh and one more thing, did you know that any attempt to normalize hormonal imbalances is futile until blood sugar and adrenal issues are addressed? This means that if you’re eating processed foods, high glycemic foods (including bread and wheat products) as well as sodas then you likely have blood sugar imbalances. The good news is that you can change all of this by supporting your body with nutrient-dense, whole foods.
