MusicArt London  Conceptual Concerts for musicians, artists & art spaces. Creating & collaborating across art forms since 2015. Founded by Annie Yim.

Flowers and thoughtful notes post-event at the Science Museum for the Mathematical Science Research Institute (MSRI) 💜 #unexpected #connections #music #piano #Bach #mathematician #marcusdusautoy #symmetry #performance #playwright #tomstoppard #MSRI

An evening of unexpected connections (r-l): Sir Tom Stoppard, Annie Yim, Marcus du Sautoy, co-hosts Ed Baker and Dame Mary Archer, and David Eisenbud. Very exciting to be part of this wonderful collaboration across disciplines and across the Atlantic with the US-based Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at the Science Museum. #mathematics #music #architecture #poetry #theatre #science #collaboration #multidisciplinary #London

So thrilled to perform from Bach’s Goldberg Variations, brought to laser-sharp focus by the celebrated Marcus du Sautoy’s talk on symmetry in the piece. The inspiring setting with amazing acoustics was the Winton Gallery at the Science Museum, designed by #ZahaHadid, with a huge 3-dimensional canopy based on the air flows that would have surrounded the aircraft in flight.

Playing #Bach with the celebrated mathematician Marcus du Sautoy’s talk on the art of symmetry for the Science Museum and the Mathematical Research Sciences Institute (MSRI) at the inspiring Mathematics: The Winton Gallery designed by #ZahaHadid #Bach #GoldbergVariations #piano #performance #AnnieYim #marcusdusautoy #sciencemuseum #msri #music #mathematics

A great honour to give a special performance with a fascinating talk by #mathematician Marcus du Sautoy, “A Song To Symmetry” at the Zaha Hadid-designed Mathematics: The Winton Gallery at the Science Museum. All set up last night for Music and Mathematics, and more, at the Science Museum for the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) event. #mathematics #music #gallery #zahahadid #collaboration #Bach #GoldbergVariations #piano #performance #AnnieYim #marcusdusautoy #sciencemuseum #msri #aboutlastnight

"In music, as in painting and even in the written word...there is always a gap which is completed by the imagination of the author” - Charles Baudelaire. Watch our weekly live video, this week featuring the pairing of composer #Debussy and poet #Baudelaire, where the piano piece “Sounds and perfume turn in the evening air” (1910) was inspired by Baudelaire’s poem Harmonie du Soir.
.
Excerpt from Baudelaire’s poem:
.
The season is at hand when swaying on its stem
.
Every flower exhales perfume like a censer
.
Sounds and perfume turn in the evening air
.
Melancholy waltz and languid vertigo!

Loving #JohnCage this week. His beautiful love poem (1943) to his longtime partner and collaborator #MerceCunningham was juxtaposed with Cage’s piano piece Dream (1948) in our performance. The piano piece was premiered with choreography by Cunningham. #live #performance #ThePoetSpeaks #piano #poetry #AnnieYim #musicartlondon #Conceptual #Concert @cityuniversitylondon

Special thanks to the John Cage Trust for the typed manuscript of the poem.

Pleased to share the second of our series of weekly live videos in May from our Conceptual Concert.

This multimedia installation pays tribute to the friendship between poet and artist, and unveils - in the composer’s own voice - the inspiration behind the music.

Live video of performance from our recent project: a poetic transition from the conceptual silence of John Cage’s 4’33” (1952) to Arvo Pärt’s new aesthetic “Tintinabulli” (little bells) born in his Für Alina (1976). Here performed by Annie Yim, accompanied by the recorded voice of poet Zaffar Kunial’s new work in response - “Sunlight’”. #darknesstolight

The concept of MusicArt London | Conceptual Concerts was born after this inspiring collaboration with the brilliant @erdemlondon @erdem for his 2014 London Fashion Week show. The music chosen for this occasion was Fratres (1977) by #ArvoPart, performed by pianist #AnnieYim and cellist #RichardBirchall. Erdem’s monochrome collection incorporated poetry by #waltwhitman and #emilydickinson sewn into the garments.

Thrilled to receive a great review of our recent multimedia Conceptual Concert for music/poetry/art, The Poet Speaks: From Debussy to Pärt, for live piano + recorded voices. ‘An intriguing and highly original concert by pianist Annie Yim’.
Stay tuned for our live video! Our gratitude to Arvo & Nora Pärt, and the Arvo Pärt Centre for their help in our research for this project.
.
One of the pieces was Arvo Pärt’s Für Alina, an iconic piano piece written in 1976. ‘Poet Zaffar Kunial wrote “Sunlight” in response to the music, a short yet meaningful poem which perfectly complemented the simplicity and profundity of Pärt’s writing’. Full review on @musicartlondon across social media.
