Let's not get into games about who can write the toughest programs or workout. I totally agree we need to challenge and push our clients, but in the right way. You should not be proud that your client nearly puked or can't walk for days after a session.

As we reach the limit of our capacity, form breaks down and our nervous system defaults to safety mode, hanging on tissues/ligaments/joints to find the stability required to complete the movement. Now, I'm not here to be the 1 rep max police. Ain't nobody got time for that. BUT, if you're trying to learn a new pattern (or phase out an old, dysfunctional one) load can, and will become the enemy real quick.

Once that nervous system of your perceives that the load is too great (and it doesn't have to be extremely heavy for this to occur) it's going to default to what it knows, what is safe, and what may or may not be super ugly.

So, when it comes to load (external or just your own body weight), use it wisely. It can be an absolutely excellent tool to expose dysfunction, to build strength, to engrain new patterns...but it can and will also reinforce those 💩-y ones that you're working so hard to get rid of. That ego of yours can be the heaviest load of all. Don't be afraid to leave it at the door.

It still baffles me how certain individuals can spend more time worrying about having the newest car or device but neglect the one thing keeping them going in life. We only get one body so let's not let it down, it's way more amazing than we give it credit for.

Usually when dealing with pain we can send all our attention to the site of pain but fail to realise that it's the byproduct of an issue above or below the chain.

In the absence of direct trauma, often times the area with pain is symptomatic because it's doing work for another area that has decided to go on vacation. So go ahead and treat the painful area, but make sure you find the slacker, or else you're going to be treating that tissue forever. #Maestrofied

Who doesn't love some corrective exercises? My one issue is when they are used to paper over the cracks of a training program that could be the reason you're getting injured or hurt.
I think you should protect before you correct. If my client is having an issue with a movement pattern then it's more powerful to stop the movement that could be reinforcing poor technique. Then you can identify the reason (load, technique, environment) and figure out the best solution.

Time for core war or reactive core training/perturbation.
In short it's random external forces applied to the body during an exercise. Your core is forced to react and engage to maintain stability against the sudden disturbance similar to how it maintains stability on the field or in everyday life.
Great fun at the end of the session for these two. Not just fun but as a trainer I can use it to assess any breaking/weak points in the chain allowing me to make changes to the program.

Give it a try - I made sure to get them to change foot position every 30 seconds.

This is a great visual to see the link between our diaphragm and feet.

Whether you are a personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach or a therapist, we should all be assessing a clients ability to breathe well, and if we don't know how to, then referring to someone who does.

Just bringing awareness to a client about how they are breathing could make a huge difference with how they feel and move.
