“To Accept Oneself Completely” | 2018 | first self-portrait | oil, spray paint, and crayon on canvas | 48 x 72 inches | Seven years ago, I had recently dropped out of school to go all in on the path that I felt I needed to be on. I felt a little lost, I felt this need for expression and self exploration within me but I didn’t know how to. What I was making, just wasn’t filling me up enough. I knew I needed to dig deeper. It was so frustrating at times that it would bring me to tears. I felt like up to that point I was living life for others instead of letting myself live my life and speak my own truths. One day, I was at the peak of a deep meditation when my grandma, who had past away years earlier came up behind me and put her arms around me. The hair on my neck stood up and I felt like I was three inches off the bed. She whispered in my ear, “You’re exactly who you need to be, now go be it.” It was one of the most profound moments of my life and has given me everything I’ve needed to navigate me to this point. This upcoming show “In Pursuit of Beautiful Truths” is a collection of paintings I’ve been working on for the last two years. Each painting is of a photograph I’ve taken or was taken of me, of loved ones in pivotal life-affirming moments during curated adventures to find out how we are and what we’re about. Each painting has evolved into something that needs to be felt not just seen. I wanted to see what would happen if I painted something with so much meaning to me, with so much love, so much energy, so much intention. Paintings and moments that need to be experienced and felt, not just looked at or thought about, is what I’ve been after. I want to make things that move me. I want to live moments that move me. Like life itself, these things need to be experienced to be felt. To experience and to feel, is as real as it gets. This is my best foot forward at this point. To say I put everything into this show... would be an understatement. I’m very excited to put this show on and to share a special opening reception with all who will be there. I hope to see you there. February 24. Los Angeles. @mugellogallery 😎
