Mile 22
Director: Peter Berg
Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Lauren Cohan, Iko Uwais, Rhonda Rousey, Sam Medina and John Malkovich
Review: This latest collaboration between Mark Wahlberg & Peter Berg was an utter soul destroying experience just because of how excited I was for it. There last three films together (Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon & Patriots Day) we’re exceptional adaptations of tragic but inspirational true stories and I was excited to see them do a fun action film that didn’t have the pressures of being a true story. Instead, Mile 22 was a poorly written, poorly directed and horribly edited mess. Mile 22 should’ve been a simple movie to execute right, but Peter Berg made all the wrong decisions. The action would’ve been cool if he didn’t cut every 2 seconds with shaky cam and extreme close ups. It was really hard to watch at times and I was begging for at least one wide shot or long take. Mark Wahlberg delivers an intense performance, but in the worst possible way. His character is such an unlikable asshole. Seriously, it’s insane. Lauren Cohan’s character was also unlikable but she wasn’t as bad as Wahlberg. Iko Uwais was the standout, even though Peter Berg never fully showcased how bad ass we know he can be from The Raid. Mile 22 is also edited with flash-forward scenes stitched throughout the occurring action which frustratingly staggers the pace. One of the only redeeming aspects was a cool twist at the end. Overall, the mere mentioning of ‘Mile 22’ annoys me because it had so much potential!
