Hiya! How are you? Hope you're having a good weekend. It's H day. What H words or phrases communicate Montessori? What do they mean to you? Remember to tag a friend and go to #abcofmontessori to read or contribute to the previous letters.

A lot of Montessori is about trust. Trust in the child and trust in the process. This applies to both Montessori parenting and Montessori education. This trust can be hard when almost everything around you seems to counter your beliefs and people around you constantly question you. A strong understanding of the philosophy and ideas makes it easier to trust. Solu is 4 and until recently he did not know the alphabets - both name and sounds. He had not shown any interest and I didn't insist. I have learned that when there is interest, the learning is swift, deep and sustained. It is filled with joy and discovery. The child feels like he is teaching himself as opposed to being taught. It is truly a joy to observe. There is a lot of counting (large numbers) and writing happening around here and I am glad I trusted the process. #montessori

I was thinking about the #abcofmontessori when I made this video 2 days ago. I saw Awe, Autonomy, Baby, Confidence, Concentration, Development, Exploration, Eye-hand coordination, Effort, Fine motor skills, Freedom of movement, Growth and Gross motor skills. Has this exercise made you see more Montessori or at least think more about it? I hope so. I spent the morning talking parenting and Montessori with a new friend @rhodasmum_hobs and I feel truly blessed to have Montessori tools and to be able to share them. If you haven't already, join the #abcofmontessori conversation

I recently told someone that this would be used by children for hand washing and she responded "but it will break and wasted!" Yes, it will probably break eventually but it will not have been a waste. In fact, that in itself would be another important lesson for the child(ren). For children to gain an appreciation for beautiful and fragile things, we need to make them available and accessible to them (the children). They appreciate the beauty and so treat the environment with more respect. It also gives them the message that we respect, value and trust them. If and when it does break, they would have experienced a natural consequence with a lasting impression. Bowls and pitchers are replaceable but the impressions the child absorbs becomes part of him forever!

These guys. It's amazing to think how much time has passed and how much they have grown. The last few years have been intense with so much happening... Montessori training, new babies, different jobs, different countries, change change change. I'm not sure how we have managed but I can feel all of us craving calm, consistency, roots, connections, extended family, community, and physical friendships. We have one more big change coming and then hopefully we can find the calm that we seek. Fingers crossed. I feel like I've said this before but it's really all I can think about. This desire for stillness.

C is for Couch. Supporting gross motor development, sibling bonds and joyful childhoods since it was invented. Lol. Sometimes no toys are needed. I have been working on not intervening when they roughhouse and today I saw that it is for the best. They negotiated, respectfully communicated when uncomfortable and apologized as needed. There were moments that almost gave me a heart attack but they would laugh it off and continue. It has taken me some time, a lot of observation and self discipline to understand and accept that rough play is a normal part of childhood and life with siblings. I am still a work in progress but I definitely see improvements.
