By @thetravelbanjara - Fishing techniques of the locals in Mangalajodi. The wetlands present a very favourable habitat for the fishes to grow. Using these bamboo structures they trap the fish which is then sold off in nearby markets, to tourists, self consumed or preserved by drying. Special ponds have been dedicated to rear fish as well. The fishes of Chilika are already quite famous from their flavour due to the brackish nature of the water.
You can also see a local delicacy of mashed fishes in one of my previous posts .

By @explorewith_asit - “Mudhi Mansa” or “Puffed Rice with Mutton Curry” and #mayurbhanj district in #odisha are synonyms for each other.
.
It is a belief with the people of Mayurbhanj that if you consume Mudhi (Puffed Rice) after a meal, it will help in digesting the food you eat.
.
.
Had this awesome preparation at Tribal Museum Food Court, Bhubaneswar .

By @thetravelbanjara - When I was in Mangaljodi few days ago, I came across this Star-fruit tree. Until then, I had only eaten star fruit but hadn't seen its tree.
Star fruit is a small to medium sized juicy tropical exotic fruit and native to Indonesia, Malaysia and southern China. This fruit has oxalic acid in it and because of this, it is acidic in nature. However, based on variety, this can be sweet or sour fruit. The star fruit tastes like combination of grape, apple & citrus flavors. This fruit has crispy texture. This fruit can be eaten fresh or used in salads. Star fruit is also known as “carambola” and it is a small tree with drooping branches and produces golden yellow oval shaped fruits. This fruit can be cultivated commercially or it’s perfect for your back yard. Usually this fruit shape is like star with ribbed structure measuring about 12 cm in length.

I think it's called "Karamanga" in Odia. Ones in the pic are still raw barring few which I ate.
Have you eaten this?

By @thetravelbanjara - (Continued from previous post....) So what brought this monumental change? Or more like who?

The credit goes to a visionary named Nanda Kishore Bhujabal. He was a local from the nearby village of Tangi, who felt the need to do something about the sorry state of affairs in the area. He knew it would be a herculean task to take people into confidence because that would mean taking away their major source of income. People were not ready to listen to him and at times even threatened him. But he was not a quitter.

After lots of cajoling and counselling over the years, he made the villagers realise the senselessness and brutality of their actions. Gradually, he was able to take the villagers into fold by the formation of Mahavir Pakshi Suraksha Samiti, a wing of Wild Odisha( Bhujabal’s organisation working towards wildlife conservation in the state). Wild Odisha partnered with Forest Department of the Government of Odisha, Royal Bank of Scotland & Indian Grameen Services to initiate community development and provide the villagers with alternate sources of income. They were provided proper training and education about the various avifauna that arrive there. Now they work as guides for tourists and bird enthusiasts.

Slowly, Mangaljodi has been developed into an eco-tourism spot. It is an exemplary example of peaceful co-existence between man and the wild.
