Mithun  Design for Positive Change // Seattle + San Francisco

Site visits are a crucial part of acquainting our teams with place and context.

Last week we joined with the @pacificnorthwestballet, project team and friends to celebrate the opening of the new Francia Russell Center in Bellevue. We’re excited to see the school for ballet fill with music, dance and the buzzing energy of students.

Elaine Liffgens led us on a site visit of 450 Alaskan Way, where rustic roots find a contemporary home. A wooden trellis encourages movement through the lobby, which is long and linear due to below-grade parking constraints. The exposed brick of an adjacent building acts as a feature wall, highlighting the historic character of the Pioneer Square neighborhood. On the 9th floor, a lounge and amenity spaces lead to a roof deck offering panoramic views of the Seattle Waterfront and downtown.

Urban designers from both San Francisco and Seattle offices collaborated on a multi-day design charrette planning for revitalization of an existing neighborhood near downtown Phoenix, and designing mixed-income, multi-family housing on three existing sites within that neighborhood.

Our Seattle office gathered outside Pier 56 this morning as temperatures dropped and light waned under the natural phenomena in the sky. Together we witnessed the moon eclipse the sun in near totality using make-shift camera obscuras and protective glasses.

Completed in collaboration with @interim_cda, Hirabayashi Place brings affordable housing and a daycare with rooftop play area to the Seattle International District’s historic Japantown. The building is named for Gordon Hirabayashi, who defied the mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII, and features art installations that will enlighten visitors about his legacy of justice. 📷: Lara Swimmer

Find @Mithun_Design at the South Lake Union Block Party today! We are excited to share a table with @sawhorse.revolution. In the spirit of #DesignforPositiveChange, you can step into our Nordic Heritage Museum through virtual reality, or hear about Sawhorse’s work leading high school students to build tiny houses for the homeless. #SLUBP proceeds benefit @marysplacewa , serving homeless women, children, and families.

We recently joined with @UCSanDiego and @HenselPhelps to celebrate our successful collaboration and the opening of the Mesa Nueva graduate student housing neighborhood. Thank you, UC San Diego for a wonderful event!

In last Friday’s Creative Series event, Josh Distler shared his passion for printmaking. The session incorporated printmaking history and methods, a deft demonstration and hands-on exploration. For a glimpse into his work: jdistler.com. 📷: Greg Catron
