Six states in less than a week. Home states, second to home states, borderline Mexico.
Lots of driving, flying, laughter, and tears.
Lots of family, love, stories told, and...
Lots of good ol' southern comfort food.

My grandfather, the young man on the left. All heart and grace and kindness. We knew him as Baboo, or Cowboy as my grandmother affectionately called out to him, but his name was Wilbur Reginald Knowles. When this photo was taken he had no idea how much he would mean to so many people. The community in which he lived cherished him. He was on every board of that small Texas town in which we grew up. He used to bring chocolate popsicles to the garbage men on hot summer mornings. He drove American cars - always. He inadvertently schooled me in Big Band growing up, which set me up for a lifetime of musical curiosity (a more improvisational jazz obsession soon followed those easy sounds of Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington.) When I was a little girl he chauffeured me around the neighborhood in his white Cadillac to take in the Christmas lights. We regularly attended charity bingo night across the bay and he would clean up with prizes every single time. His sprawling backyard and gardens of flowers, vegetables, fruit and nut trees are my most favorite memories of childhood and I remember them perfectly. He was supportive and patient, loving, loyal and dutiful. He taught our family what a real man looked and behaved like and the men in my family are examples of this. In every way he was the father I never had. He was loved by so many. I miss him terribly but I am comforted knowing that he is with his loved ones gone, somewhere among the stars.

The sun sets and my experience and belief reassure me, that no matter how tough the day, the sun rises in the morning. I am grounded in this faith and I am reminded today that life is affirmed in the stillness and peace and positivity of moments like these. And if you're fortunate enough to be surrounded and supported, unconditionally, by those that really know and love you then, well, you have a miraculous chance of finding that extra reserve of strength that you thought you might not have had. I am very fortunate and I know that love is all around and love is all you need. There is hope in love. And life in each breath you take.
