Did you know you can nominate a Hope Spot? The nomination process is open to all! This is the only global platform for informally recognizing special places in the marine world that comes from you- the global community.

The mangrove is the ocean's giving tree. It gives shelter to fish, it gives coastlines a break from pounding waves, and it gives the planet a break by sequestering carbon, lots of it.

“The species that are here now will have to migrate further and further north...[Species] will try to shift the habitat towards the cooler climate that they are used to. But of course that only works for a certain amount of time because then there’s just no north anymore… So that means that their habitat is just shrinking and shrinking and eventually they get out-competed by other species." Peter Leopold, a PhD Candidate in the Department of Arctic and Marine Biology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø, on the Spitsbergen Island Hope Spot.

Life is abundant at the Revillagigedo Archipelago Hope Spot and marine protected area! It's a huge step for protecting migratory species, like sharks and manta rays. #OceanFirstFriday

"Wild fish, like wild birds, have a place in the natural ecosystem which outweighs their value as food. They're part of the systems that make the planet function in our favor, and we should be protecting them because of their importance to the ocean." #SylviaEarle

The world’s largest land predator, polar bears are larger and more carnivorous than grizzlies and hunt both on land and in the sea. But on Mission Blue’s latest Hope Spot Expedition to the Spitsbergen Island Hope Spot, the bears we observed were more threatened than threatening.

"If you visit this place for the first time, I think you would think this is the way it should be, but I remember coming here 20 years ago and I see a massive change right now. The glacier has really retreated a long way, and calving all the time. We’ve heard several big pieces fall off in the short period that we’ve been here. So there are really some significant changes." Carl Gustaf Lundin, Director of the Global Marine and Polar Program for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Mission Blue Board Director on the changes at the Spitsbergen Island Hope Spot.⠀

"Ecologically, [Antarctic krill] Euphausia superba is considered a keystone species in the Southern Ocean food web. Fish, seabirds, seals, and whales consume tons and tons and tons of krill on an annual basis. Even invertebrates like sea stars and other crustaceans will feed on this defenseless just-keep swimming and eating critter. Krill is thus considered the ecological driver of the Southern Ocean. If krill are happy and abundant, so too the Southern Ocean." Maggie Amsler, @univofalabama
