The Niagara Cafe in Gundagai is a fabulously preserved working example of the Greek cafe, something Greek immigrants pioneered in country towns in NSW and Qld in the early 1900s, and which surged in the post-war 50s.

Gundagai greets you with this very emotional memorial to two heroes: Wiradjuri men Yarri and Jacky. The original town was built much closer to the river in defiance of Wiradjuri knowledge. In June 1852 rains set in; settlers ignored Indigenous locals’ advice to evacuate, the Murrumbidgee rose, and on 24 June the population of 250 found themselves stranded on rooftops and in trees, their town washed away. Yarri and Jacky launched their bark canoe and braved dangerous flood waters, making trip after trip through the day and into the night, rescuing 49 people. 79 were killed - the number would’ve been much higher if not for these men. In what became known as the Great Flood of 1852 Yarri and Jacky were the heroes. This recent memorial finally tells their story, and is proudly placed for all to see as you arrive in town.
Tip: it’s a much better spot to stop at than that bloody over-rated dog up the road.
