Today marks the anniversary of the opening of First Ave. The former Greyhound bus station in Minneapolis opens its doors in 1970 as a music club, the Depot. Eight years later it would be renamed First Avenue by Steve McClellan, the booking agent of the club, and Jack Meyers, the club's financial manager. A cornerstone of the city's music scene, First Avenue hosted local and national acts and was featured in Prince's movie Purple Rain.
This picture of Prince's star painted gold at First Avenue was taken by Kelly Ward in 2016 after his passing. #photography #history

At last night’s event at the Guthrie, viewers heard a pointed panel discussion on how far we have come since the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and what we can do to live up to his legacy. Interspersed with the panel discussion were speeches that Dr. King gave throughout his lifetime. As we approach the 50th anniversary of his passing, we look at what history has taught us and how relevant that history is today. #mlk50 #1968exhibit #civilrights #history
