Outtakes from my story on Najim’s wondrous work in the current issue of @cabanamagazine — hand crafted furniture in strawberry (arbutus unedo) wood made in Northern Morocco photographed in Umberto Pasti and Stephan Janson’s magical garden. .

An absolute pleasure to study up close every delicate brushstroke on these watercolors: Tulip by Simon Verelst (1644-1721), Gentian by Jacob van Huysum (1682-1749), and Magnolia by Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-70)

Thank you to @emilythompsonflowers, @gamine_co, #jonnybruce, #johngwynne and #mikelfocarelli for two beautiful, thoughtful, and inspiring days in this wondrous garden. I appreciate the challenge to push my work further, to seek new ways of looking at plants, gardens, and the life they foster.

My favorite project last year was working with @ericatanov on her book Design By Nature. We spent time in the woods, by the sea, at botanical gardens, in artists’ studios, recording Erica’s inspiration and her creative process. This Sunday, Erica will be at Layla Brooklyn to sign copies of her book. Come by.

Knitting on a rainy day and thinking of the stark lives of the Aran Islanders, whose livelihood depended on fishing in the sea and raising sheep for wool and food. The fishermen’s wives knitted sweaters that were laden with symbols—the cable stitch to depict the fisherman’s ropes and thus a wish for a productive day at sea, the diamond stitch to remind the wearer of the small fields of the islands, the moss stitch to represent the seaweed used to fertilize the barren land. Each sweater bears a unique pattern, full of meanings, closely guarded and passed through generations. .
