On the other side of Plaza de España you can see two of the most representative buildings in the city.

Torre Madrid (142m) built between 1954 and 1960, that was for some years the tallest concrete building in the world, and until the end of Torrespaña (1982), the tallest building in Spain. Also, the tallest building in Europe until 1967. Inside there is currently a luxury hotel and apartments.

Edificio España (117m) (1948-1953). The building, designed as multifunctional, housed the Crowne Plaza Hotel, a shopping center, apartments, and offices until the beginning of the 21st century. After its sale in 2005 and a process of rehabilitation of the facade, since 2012 the building was closed without intended use. It was later bought by the Wanda group and sold in 2017 to the Rui Hotels that is now responsible for building a large hotel, which is scheduled to open in summer 2019 with more than 550 rooms.

Plaza de España, Madrid
The view from the VP Plaza España Design shows how green is Plaza de España next to Parque del Oeste. There is a project to join these two zones that are now separated by a road that will start this fall.

On the left side you can see the Casa Gallardo, one of the most outstanding examples of modernist architecture in the city. Inside you can find the restaurant Club Allard with two Michelin stars.
On the right side the Monument to Miguel de Cervantes. The figures of honor in the monument represent Cervantes, seated under a pedestal, with the bronze statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza riding respectively on Rocinante. Crowned with the globe of the world and the five continents, allegory of the spread of the Spanish language throughout the world.

Calle Leganitos & Fomento, from the VP Plaza España Design is one of the oldest streets in Madrid.
Formerly irrigated by the fountain of Leganitos and its stream and area of Moors with orchards in the period of Muslim Madrid. There is information of this street since 1612.

The fountain of Leganitos disappeared at the beginning of the 20th century with the creation and urbanization of the Plaza de España.

Without much publicity Calle Leganitos has become now a small Chinatown with a lot of Chinese businesses.

Another good rooftop to see Madrid is the new hotel VP Plaza España Design (@vp_hoteles). In this picture you can see 4 important buildings of the city of Madrid:

1. The Senate on the right, legislative power of the state.

2. The Royal Palace (1764), used for state ceremonies and solemn acts. Built after the Royal Alcázar of Madrid was burned.

3. Catedral de la Almudena (1993), built on the site of an old mosque in neoclassical style.

4. On the left the Opera House - Royal Theatre (1850). The scenic tower can be seen in the photograph.

Also from the Circulo de Bellas Artes we can see the Calle Alcalá.

First the roofs of the Bank of Spain, the body of the Spanish State that acts as the national central bank.

The Cibeles square, used for sports celebrations of Real Madrid fans and divides the boundaries of the districts Centro, Retiro and Salamanca.
Palacio de Comunicaciones (1919), current City Hall of Madrid.

Torrespaña, "el pirulí" (232m), from there they broadcast twenty digital terrestrial television channels, fourteen FM analog radio channels and eighteen digital radio channels (DAB). And the Cuartel General de la Armada, Headquarters of the maritime branch of the Spanish Armed Forces. It is one of the oldest active naval forces in the world.

From the Circulo de Bellas Artes there is also a fantastic view of the north of Madrid.
On the right Torres de Colón (110m), originally it was conceived as two twin towers that shared the same base, but after the reform made in the early 1990s, these were joined by a fire escape hanging from a greenish, plug-shaped finish. It was the tallest office building in Madrid until the Picasso Tower was completed in 1989.

Exactly on the left side of the picture you can see a white building that is the Picasso Tower (156m) designed by Japanese-American architect Minoru Yamasaki (who also designed the old World Trade Center in New York). Was the tallest building in Madrid until 2007 when the CTBA was built.

Near Torre Picasso in the picture (but further in distance) you can see 3 of the 4 towers of the CTBA , business park consists of four skyscrapers that are the tallest buildings in Madrid and Spain (230-249m). #madrid_bigcity #madrid_joven #themadridbible #mad_hoc #madrid_monumental #ok_madrid #estaes_madrid #ig_madrid #ig_madrid_city #madridtme #unlimitedmadrid #madrid #madrid_best_photos #topmadridphoto #madridtime #madridmemola #madridmola #madridseduce #madridcity #madridgram #madridmemata #madridmolamazo #visitspain #spain_in_bl #ok_spain #spain_gallery #spaintravel #spainlife #spain_photographs #skyscrapers

Edificio del Banco de Bilbao, Madrid, Spain 🇪🇸 Projected in 1919 by the architect Ricardo Bastida y Bilbao and built between 1920 and 1923. The former headquarters of the Banco de Bilbao constitutes one of the most representative buildings of the financial Madrid.

The monumental facade was initially symmetrical, topped by two towers about five meters high, whose summits were placed in 1922: bronze sculptures, representing a chariot.
During the Civil War the building was seized and turned into «Palace of the Parties», exhibiting the acronyms of the Frente Popular and the unions. The chariots, which were covered in gilded brass and which, therefore, could serve as reference for the Francoist bombardments on the city, were painted black. That color remains today.

The BBVA bank decided to concentrate its Madrid facilities in a single place and, in 2006, sold the property to the GMP real estate company. Since 2010, and for a minimum period of ten years, the building is the headquarters of the Ministry of Environment and Planning of the Community of Madrid.

Grassy Building, Gran Vía 1, Madrid, Spain 🇪🇸 Located right next to the Metropolis Building. The Grassy building was designed by the Spanish architect Eladio Laredo in 1916 as homes. In 1952 the Swiss watchmaker Alejandro Grassy is established on the ground floor and opens a high-end watch shop, giving the building its popular name.
During decades of the XX century the facade has shown advertisements of different watches. At the beginning of the 21st century an announcement of the Rolex house (a golden crown) stands out. From this same time the building houses a museum dedicated to watchmaking.

On the left side of the picture the historic street Caballero de Gracia (XVI), in which the construction of the Gran Vía had to carry out the demolition of the entire line of buildings of odd numbers, saving only the Oratory.

Metrópolis Building at night, Madrid, Spain. 🇪🇸 Contemplating the Metropolis Building illuminated at night is a true spectacle. For that 205 bulbs are used.

Many people consider that this building marks the beginning of the Gran Vía but is not like that. The exact address of the Metrópolis Builing is Calle Alcalá 39.

Metrópolis Building, Madrid, Spain. 🇪🇸 It was built on the land released during the construction of the Gran Vía, when the popularly known as "Casa del Ataud" was demolished, between the streets of Alcalá and Caballero de Gracia. Recall that the Gran Vía was built to decongest the historic center due to the increasing road traffic and to be an emblematic center and communication route linking the eastern suburbs to the west of the city. For that, they had to demolish almost three hundred houses and 15 streets disappeared. The complete work lasted between 1910 when the buildings began until 1955.

The Metropolis Building in this picture is one of the most representative buildings in Madrid. Built between 1907 and 1911, after knocking down seven houses. Was the tallest building in Madrid until 1921. The brightness of the building is due to 30,000 gold work of 24-carat gold. Since 1972 it belongs to the insurer Metrópolis.
