Max Grossman  glassblower, toolmaker, garbageman

Need another example of what the tools do? Here's a little demo outta my cereal bowl crucible showing the thin lined crimps being tested on a flower. Texture comes out nice! Check out my previous post to see the handmade tool. Jacks also made by me!#glasswork #glassblowing #crimp #texture #oldschool #handtools #flower #satisfying #video #art #handmade #makeyourowntools #glassart #toolmaking #blacksmith #glass #satisfying #chandelier #bottleglass #cokebottles #wastenotwantnot

excited about my recent find - a catalog from I'm guessing the 1940s from Apex Tool and Cutter Co, who made the same sort of tools in the same Connecticut town as the company that made my set of shaper tooling at the turn of the century. This catalog shows what the tools can do inside a railroad shop - making huge parts for train wheels, axles, pistons etc on giant planers, vertical turret lathes, shapers and all kinds of great old school machining tools. It's got really nice illustrations that pop out of the page, and beautiful hand writing. It's a valuable resource for someone like me still trying to figure out old school single point cutting tools! #machining #metalshaper #metalplaner #verticalturretlathe #railroad #trains #rail #railroadmuseum #machinist #singlepointcutting #oldschool #manualmachinist

not a glassblower? curious what those tools do? or maybe you are one and want a demo - either way, this video is for you. this is the biggest of the texture tools, made by yours truly and my trusty old shaper. #glass #satisying #texture #glasstools #squishy #howitsmade #glassart #tools #crimp #craft #glassblowingtools #handmade #sohotrightnow

If you've been watching my story this week, I've been working on a set of crimp tools in my free time, and I've finally got em finished and up for sale. Made with 1050 carbon steel handles and 1018 mild steel paddles, they are 10-11 inches long with 1.5" wide paddles on the big ones and 3/4 wide on the smalls. The only one left is the small 3/4 inch lined one at 160$ shipped. #glasstools #glassblowing #blacksmithing #machining #metalshaper #makeyourowntools #glassblowingtools #crimp #texture #handmade #prototypes #madeinla

I'm really excited to share my latest find from 1944, from the U.S. Bureau of Mines and Chevrolet. Featuring only the best archival glassblowing footage and wordy narration, this first part shows hand blowing into iron molds. The narrator is right about mechanical innovation, sorta - the "mold boy" which replaces the assistant opening the mold was invented at the turn of the century. But iron molds were really the only new technology since the Renaissance. Love the bit about not needing to blow hard - anyone who has done serious moldblowing knows it! I'll be sharing more from this one soon. For educational use! #glass #history #oldschool #vintageglass #howitsmade #manufacturing #glassfactory #glassart #moldblowing #ironmold #handmade #skill #factorytechniques

finally finished my hacksaw attachment for the shaper! forged the frame outta mild steel, turned the handle on the lathe (and the pins outta A2), drilled holes with the drill press, made the wedge with the shaper, and cleaned everything up with a file and my polishing lathe. Only thing store bought was the Starrett hacksaw blade! I wanted a way to cut clean slices of patterned metal for making crimps and bottle tools, and while my Edwards shear is great, it ain't clean! This is inspired by old school forged hacksaw frames and a couple photos I've seen on the net of other modern shaper hacksaw attachments. On to the next project! #machining #metalshaper #edwardsshear #steptoeshaper #manualmachinist #machinist #hacksaw #makeyourowntools #forgedandfiled #toolmaking #glasstools #powerhacksaw #oldschool #starrett #shapercrazy

and for a little contrast, here's video from 1943 on some of the early machines for automated glass light bulb making which mimic the human motions of the glassblower. These types of glass machines have a rotating tank of molten glass underneath the blowing assembly, and actually suck up little bits of glass via suction and deliver them to pipes! Predates the IS machine, which cuts gobs from a stream of glass. Pretty neat! And oddly mesmerizing- I could watch it on loop for a while.....#glass #satisying #automation #glassmaking #howitsmade #glassart #craft #machine #handcraft #machining #lightbulb #manufacturing #factorytechniques

got a sweet care package in the mail the other day from the coolest guy on IG, @oldtape61. Barry is a man just as passionate about community as he is finding immaculate antique tape measures, and it shows! He's constantly promoting other folks' pages and connecting people to posts they might like, and with the same energy traveling around to meet people and visit different places old tools are sold. Truly an inspiration and totally worth a follow - I tried to find my favorite antique glassblowing, blacksmithing, and machine tools to take a photo in the sweet gear he sent me. Make sure you check out his page, chances are you're gonna be interested in something or someone he's connected to. And a big overall thanks to the Instagram community- it's truly a honor to know everyone. #glassblowing #blacksmithing #machining #oldtools #antiquetools #glasstools #makeyourowntools #oldschool #venicebeach #bornxraised #losangeles #glamourshots

always good times working for @natecotterman and @tylerbarrydesign - here's a little video edit of them deep into cup production. The cups are blown into a wood mold, then opened up by hand - blink and ya might miss it! #glassblowing #handmade #design #art #losangeles #elsegundo #lighting #glass #kitchen #craft #glassart #skillstopaymybills

forgot to share this bit of shaper action - if you look at my drill press, the base was missing, so I made a new one complete with T slots for bolting work to the base. In this video you can see the trick to cutting T slots on the shaper - using a hinge strapped to the back of the toolbit to lift the tool so it doesn't crash into the work on the return stroke. Found in a book from 100 years ago, of course. I made a second version outta forged mild steel in a gooseneck shape with a HSS bit brazed on and it cut even better! Take a look at the drill press video to see the finished piece bolted on the bottom. Fun to learn new tricks! #machining #metalshaper #steptoeshaper #tslot #manualmachinist #machinining #tools #makeyourowntools #oldschool #manualmachining

and for the morning I bring you footage of my favorite glassblowing move, using a hot bit of glass to heat water for espresso in a moka pot. Similar to a pressure cooker, these old school coffee makers are used all around the world and work by forcing water through grounds in the middle up to the top chamber by means of heating up the water in the bottom chamber. And what better way to do it than with molten glass? #coffee #glass #mokapot #coffeetime #espresso #glassblowing #satisfying #molten #coffeeshop #glassshop #howitsmade #glassart #functionalglass

a little satisfying footage of painting the gold lettering on the camelback drill for ya this morning - I used liquid gold leaf paint for the job. Happy with how it came out! You can see the finished lettering on my previous video of the drill. #lettering #gold #goldleaf #signpainting #painter #handlettering #handpainted #machinining #toolrestoration #blacksmith #oldtools #paint #paint #satisying #goldlettering
