Announcement 1: I made tiny #grainfree biscuits. GAH/YUM. We're having them tonight with #instantpot chili but we also ate our fair share during the day with @shelburnefarms cheddar chunks (because that stuff is amazing) and @fourthandheart #ghee. Yes my toddler has expensive taste. Biscuit recipe is on @ash_myheartbeets site. Her recipe calls for making them larger but I opted for #tiny. Announcement 2: I'm going on an Instagram vacation πŸŒ΄πŸ‘‹πŸΌso you won't reach me here for a little while. If you tag me or message me I'm not ignoring you! 😘 Please email me meredithtested@gmail.com with comments or questions big and small, I love hearing from you! [UPDATE: Ugh you guys WHY did I basically upload the same photo twice haha - first radishes, now biscuits. I swear I'm not always holding tiny food at my counter. 🀣] #glutenfree #scratchcooking #fouringredients #4ingredients #paleocooking #toddlerapproved #zerowaste

Snack time πŸ€— Any other radish with butter fans out there? #farmersmarketfresh #radish #vermontlife @bfmvermont Thank you for the beautiful radish bouquet @heartwoodvt πŸ’•

Just got back from a little #trashfree grocery trip! More details in stories. If you already shop for things in the bulk bins at your local grocery store, switch to bringing your own cloth bags. It's seriously an easy and painless #zerowaste move. In fact I think it's easier than coming home with a pile of plastic to manage. Refuse those plastic film bags and not only will you be helping the planet 🌎 but you'll help your home environment! That's been one of the lovely unexpected benefits of #goingzerowaste - less time dealing with all the packaging. Seems small but unpacking groceries is more of a pleasure now. I have a mix of cloth bags I made myself and some I bought. The bag shown here with the words on it I bought at a Whole Foods while traveling because I was stuck without a bulk bag. I was so pleased to see they had them for sale in the bulk section. Search "where to buy" on MeredithTested.com for all my cloth bag recommendations. #plasticfree #refuseplastic #plasticbags #banthebag #ecofriendly #ecofriendlybaby

Jars glorious jars 🎢 Why do I love glass jars so much? One word: versatility. They can hold our salad for lunch one day, our smoothie the next, then leftovers from the restaurant, a homemade cleaner (orange peels in vinegar, anyone?🍊), maple syrup we bought in the bulk section, to bring compost home from a lunch out (yes I've been known to do this!) and pretty much anything else. They're readily available, easy to clean and they won't leach nasty toxins into our food if we heat them up or we use them over and over and over… And over again. The investment is low, unlike some other areas of going zero waste. In fact, you might find jars for $0 in your recycling bin, from family/friends looking to reduce their collection, or for very little $ at your local thrift store, pictured here. You can also easily recycle them if they crack or break, or use them to bring food or other goodies to friends and not feel bad about leaving them behind. I like larger containers too - the glass ones with "snap" plastic tops are my favorite - but there's nothing like a jar. Fellow jar lovers, say hi! πŸ‘‹πŸ½πŸ™‹#masonjars #zerowaste #zerowastehome #trashfree #ecofriendly #buysecondhand #minimalism #minimalistmom

We haven't had a "nonstick" pan in the house for a while. It was intimidating at first but now we use cast iron for pretty much everything from scrambled eggs to pancakes. 🍳 I clean my cast iron pans with a little hot water and an old scrub brush head. Sometimes I'll add a tiny bit of salt or baking soda for abrasion. To dry it off I use an old dark t-shirt. No paper towels required and they're in great shape πŸ‘πŸΌπŸŒˆ I'm no expert but I'm happy with this technique! Shown here is a @cuisinart brand enamel cast iron pan plus we have a larger @lodgecastiron skillet. p.s. Thanks to a reader for asking the question! #plasticfree #zerowastehome #buyitforlife #castironpan #castironskillet #minimalistkitchen #minimalistfamily #paleo #vermontlife #whole30 [Edited to add >> Oils/fats get poured into a jar first! Then it gets scooped into the compost when the jar is full. Reminder we don't backyard compost - we bring ours to @cswdvt]

When I make things from scratch I realize all over again a few things. It helps me reduce my family's daily garbage because I buy the ingredients packageless or in bulk whenever I can, or at least I'm buying larger quantities which helps reduce the packaging-to-product ratio. It's a fun, relaxing activity. Possibly the activity also makes me feel kind of proud no matter how simple the recipe (like this #grainfree pizza crust) or how many times I've made it. πŸŽ‰πŸ‘πŸΌIt also means I know exactly what's going into the stuff I feed my family (which in this case means I add flax seeds - pictured in the background in a glass hinged jar which is stored my pantry.) If I also entertain my daughter for a few minutes in the process, bonus! That being said I get tired and burned out just like anyone (hello two young kids at home!) so I forgive myself if I don't enjoy an angelic cooking sesh every day. Also I read the other day that someone lets their kids sit on the counters as a "special treat" ... um whoops. It's daily over here πŸ˜‚πŸ‘πŸΌ #itsallaboutbalance #makeitfromscratch #scratchcooking #zerowastehome #goingzerowaste #cookingwithkids #ecofriendlybaby #glutenfree #paleo

Sometimes it seems like there are a lot of barriers to entry into the zero waste movement. Trust me, I know. You may not eat or live like the people you see online, and that’s okay. If I can do it, you can do it. Be wary of people (ahem, online bullies) who tell you that there's only one way to live in order to be eco-friendly or reduce waste. That's why I'm so excited to participate in the #ZWGroceryChallenge this summer with @going.zero.waste @bezerowastegirl @golitterless @thegirlgonegreen. My first post in the series is up - highlighting a real shopping trip to Trader Joe's. Direct link temporarily in profile ⬆️ It's a very real and revealing post, hope you enjoy! 🍎πŸ₯”πŸŒ½πŸ₯‘πŸŒπŸžπŸ³πŸ—πŸ₯˜Also - in this picture my daughter is counting the corn on her fingers "One, teo, three, four..." πŸ˜‰ #goingzerowaste #makelesstrash2017 #zerowastehome #zerowaste #ecofriendlybaby #zerowastefamily #trashfree #lowwaste #traderjoeshaul #zerowastegrocerystorechallenge

I've gotten some questions lately so I thought I'd share with everyone! Here's my current favorite (older than 6 months) baby/kid sunscreens β˜€οΈ Tip: Find a sunscreen with zinc oxide as the main ingredient. These two are not only safe and effective but plastic free! If I can't get my hands on either of these I buy Badger brand Baby Sunscreen SPF 30 in the plastic tube. We also rely on sun-protective clothing, hats and shade. We don't mess around with sun protection! πŸ˜‰β˜€οΈβ˜€οΈβ˜€οΈ#summer #sunscreen #nontoxic #plasticfree #plasticfreekids #nontoxickids #ecofriendly #summeressentials #zerowaste #zerowastefamily #zerowastehome #mompicks #momlife #toddlerlife #ecofriendlybaby

My favorite traveling with kids tip: bring a stack of cloth wipes and a spray bottle of just water or add a bit of Castile soap. I use a two-pocket wet bag - clean wipes & spray go in one pocket and dirty wipes go in the other. I'm always so glad to have this on hand and end up using them for everything! #traveltips #travelingwithkids #cartravel #roadtrip #trashfree #plasticfree #zerowastehome

Not my best work (see all the kernels? #becausedistracted #becausetoddlers) but delicious nonetheless. πŸ€£πŸ‘πŸΌ Popcorn made on the stovetop with kernels bought in the bulk section of my local natural foods store and brought home in a cloth bag (#saynotoplasticbags) ... sounds pretty darn easy to me. And honestly the best part is that it's SO much more delicious than microwave popcorn or the stuff you can buy premade in bags. What are you waiting for? Take baby steps or big leaps - whatever works for you. But I'll bet once you actively try to reduce your waste, you'll be pleasantly surprised at the benefits. Like delicious popcorn 🍿😍. #priorities #notrashchallenge @unitedbyblue

I've been looking for a big, long-handled canvas (washable) tote...this one so perfectly fit the bill. 😍 @emilymcdowell_ #zerowastehome #mindfulpurchase #groceryshopping #slowhome #slowliving #findinghumor #zerowaste #trashfree #plasticbagban #plasticfree #saynotoplasticbags
