How much do LOOKS matter?
So much of our mental space, time and energy is spent comparing ourselves with the picture perfect models (in case of magazines/movies there's a lot of reconstruction and replacements involved), aspiring to look a certain way, spending loads of money "beautifying" ourselves and even reaching that extent where we can't stand the sight of our own face/body? Why do we try so hard to "fix" our features? It is mostly because of what people think of us. What if we were to spend the same amount of resources getting more educated or educating others, contributing to the society & mankind at large?
I'm not against beauty. We are all visual creatures & it is amazing to feel empowered and confident in our own skin. What I am definitely against is the obsession around "perceived beauty", which is compelling even teenagers to live up to certain standards making them lose self-confidence instead as they don't see themselves matching the standards our society is setting. This age of super skinny, no thigh-gap, shiny hair & flawless skin set as bench marks, is affecting even little girls!
Studies show that 80% women don't feel beautiful or confident in their own skin. So many of them don't show up at a job interview because of the way they feel they look. This is not confined to women alone. Even men are falling prey to the super hero kinda body goals & hating their own bodies. Fitness and self care is good, being depressed over how u look isn't.
It is time to stop and think- What is it that we are chasing? How superficial or meaningful it is & in the end is it gonna really make us happy? Also, let's NOT bully or mock someone for something they have no control over, like looks, especially during their growth years but instead help them identify their true beauty and be better humans ourselves.
Judge people for the way they work/behave and not for the way they look.
