If you don't hold on, you have no thing to lose. To get "there", you have to be here now, and when you begin to tread along the path to become free of desire, to be free from clinging, you begin to see things in a way through which the Buddha called right view, which knows that HERE is where it all is. This IS IT. This here, is "there". Nobody goes anywhere because everybody goes to the same place; there's nowhere to go and nothing to do. It's all the same trip no matter what label you project on it. Your clinging of mind to the notion that you have an individual permanent separate self is what keeps you in the illusion that you are a "somebody" and that there is something to do. The Buddha said that Nirvana is already present here right now and possible this moment, but our vision is clouded by our constant planning, discriminating, projecting, craving, and thirst for becoming, desire for this or for that. When we realize that we have already arrived, we are practicing right mindfulness, an awareness of the deep connection we share with the Earth through our breathing.
What arises is also of the nature to come to an end - this extinguishing of projection, of concept, this cessation of thoughts of past or future, birth or death, he or she, higher or lower, greater or lesser, time or space, day or night, light or dark, good or evil, right or wrong, pain or pleasure, and form or formless, is Nirvana.
When you give up desire, you release the craving to want. When there is nothing you want, you have all you need. This is the practice of equanimity, of balance, of equipoise: your inner state is not moved by the forces of outer circumstances; there is nothing that can be subtracted from or added to you when you are already whole and one. You are the one you have been waiting for.
