Sometimes my job involves pulling out older camera equipment for historical purposes. This Leica M6 (1989) was used by Michael (Nick) Nichols for five years during the early 2000s as he followed ecologist and convservationist Mike Fay across thousands of miles (by foot!) of the Congo Basin of Africa during what was known as the MegaTransect. The many fantastic images that this camera captured in Nick's hands make it special, let alone the epic journey it went on!

Here's a #throwbackthursday to one year ago today on my second day of work @natgeo !
I was setting up a new 30' tall carbon fiber camera stand with a remote control camera head on top of it with Kenji Yamaguchi (my predecessor). It was such a wonderful time for me back then, every day a new discovery and a new skill. It may not be as frequent by I never seem to find myself idle or bored here at National Geographic.

A sampling of frames from the 2017 total eclipse. I only included photos that could tolerate a square crop. Minimal post processing on all images.
My wide angle sky timelapse video of the eclipse should be out sometime early this week. Also going to drop some 360 video of the event.

Here's a little teaser of a single frame that I cropped in Lightroom mobile while stuck at the airport. Much much more to come over the next two days. A huge shout out to my father for taking me out to TN for this great adventure together!

Final gear layout for my quick trip to Nashville, TN to view and try my best hand at photographing the 2017 total solar eclipse. We've got one #canon 5Ds with an 100-400mm lens +2x teleconverter for main solar capture as well as a second 5ds for backup and 5d mk IV for timelapse. Also I am running a #nikon Keymission 360 camera in timelapse. For viewing pleasure I'm bring a Leica spotting scope. To support all the equipment I have two large tripods, a standard tripod and an @platypodpro Max.
Two special objects are the silver tarp (underneath it all) and silver umbrella for keeping the gear cool before the shooting starts! #eclipse #photoengineer @peakdesign straps/plates

A #throwbackthursday to my first week on the job almost a year ago here @natgeo. Here I am working with the great Kenji Yamaguchi on learning how to operate a remotely operated robotic camera control system on top of a 30' tall carbon fiber camera stand. Kenji is my predecessor and NGM employee of over 35 years! I only had less than a month with Kenji before he left but I learned so much during those three weeks.

Cold weather cameras! For this week's #throwbackthursday @natgeo photographers often go to the (literal) ends of the Earth to capture their amazing images. These (among other) Nikon FM2 manual film cameras were built specially for Nat Geo by Nikon. These FM 2 cameras have been winterized with special lubricants and in some cases a lack a lubricants for extended use in extreme cold. These cameras have been used on Antarctica, Greenland, the Arctic, K2, and Everest to name a few locations. The manual nature of the camera also allows for a slow rewind of film that can get brittle in the cold.

Follow me for more insights into the photographic technology that National Geographic photographers use and have used to get the shot.

For today's #throwbackthursday here @natgeo HQ we're going to look at a small vintage piece of camera equipment. This is the Kodapod from Eastman Kodak Co. Originally introduced in 1918 for the price of $1.25 the Kodapod is a steel beartrap like camera mount that can grip it's teeth into wooden objects like fence posts and trees! It's quite strong and I hope no one was silly enough to place a finger between the jaws. Today almost one hundred years later it is still in amazing condition!
Feel free to follow me for more interesting posts weekly.
