Hello, I'd like to invite everyone to take a minute of their time and join me in celebrating marriage equality all across the United States, for it surely is a momentous success for everyone.
On the flip side, I have also seen posts elsewhere about those who are against same-sex marriage due to their religious views. Growing up in the community I did, I know these beliefs exist. However, I'd like to draw the attention to the fact that, surprising as it may be, The Bible in no way condones homosexuality. Of The Bible's 31,173 verses, homosexuality is mentioned only 6 or 7 times. This should show its lack of importance right off the bat. Four passages of the Old Testament and three in the New Testament refer to homosexuality. However, according to Hebrews 7:18-19- "The formal regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God." In practice, Christians do not follow the dictates of the Old Testament. If we did, we would also practice polygamy, couldn't eat pork, have tattoos, and numerous other restrictions. Since we no longer abide by the rules set forth in the Old Testament, we cannot use its passages to condemn homosexuality, as it does not follow the Christian directive.
The passages in the New Testament were written by Paul based on his observations of "women exchanging natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way men abandoned natural relations with women... And committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error." -Romans 1:26-27. Sounds convincing, right? What some don't realize is at the time, Roman men commonly engaged in non-consensual sex with boys and slaves. This would be repulsive in any case, gay or straight. This was accepted as normal at the time, however. Paul condemned the same-sex sexual activity he saw, but it was coercive, non-consensual sex between men and boys. It does not address same-sex marriage of a committed couple at any point.
Above all, the message of Jesus is to love all, and treat thy neighbor as you would treat yourself. Thank you for your time. #LoveWins
