The Nyiragongo stratovolcano situated in the Virunga Mountains glows a clear night in Congo DR. The Virunga mountain range is home to the critically endangered mountain gorilla, listed on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species due to poaching, habitat loss, disease and war. I took this photograph while taking part in a mountain gorilla sensus project carried out by WWF and IGCP. Nyiragongo and nearby Nyamuragira are responsible for 40% of Africa's historical volcanic eruptions. In a few weeks Dr. Jane Goodall and I are coming out with a book together. With this book we want celebrate biodiversity and the remaining beauty on Earth and to inspire everyday choices for better more sustainable world. More on this soon!

Paradise on Earth! Another image from one of my favorite marine ecosystems; Raja Ampat, Indonesia. I photographed this very remote beach from an ultralight aircraft. By protecting Raja Ampat and other vulnerable and amazing ecosystems we actually secure long term sustainable success for mankind! The norhern carmine bee-eater is one of the flying gems of Selous game reserve in Tanzania. Their diet is made up primarily of bees and other flying insects, such as locusts and grasshoppers. The main hunting strategy of these beautiful bee-eaters is to keep watch for flying insects from a perch, and then elegantly snatch them out of the air, before safely returning to the perch. Looking forward to heading back to majestic Selous this fall with @irisalexandrov #selous #carminebeeeater #tanzania #africa #protectbiodiversity #artistduoalexandrovklum #nikonambassador @alexandrovklumofficial @natgeo @thephotosociety @mattiasklumcollection

The sharp-eyed leopard have a wider field of view compared with humans. Cats in general also have a greater range of peripheral vision, perfect for identifying a prey approaching from the side.
They usually keep to themselves, lurking in dense riverine bush or around rocky areas, emerging to hunt late in the afternoon or at night. That may be why they need such good night vision. Their eyes have six to eight times more rod cells, which are more sensitive to low light, than humans do.
Their extra rod cells also allow them to sense motion in the dark in an exeptional way. Saving the illusive leopard and its habitat is a smart strategy to secure long term water supply and other ecosystem services for mankind!

My love and partner-in-crime @irisalexandrov on one of Vamizi Island’s gorgeous beaches.
Vamizi is home to some of the world’s oldest and most pristine coral reefs – a virtual wonderland of marine biodiversity. The Southern Equatorial Current meets the African continent here, bringing with it warm waters and an upwelling of rich nutrients. Sheltered by the coral reefs, the area is an undersea nursery, a critical breeding and birthing ground for hundreds of species of fish and marine mammals. We are here together to work on new photograohic art and installations for @alexandrovklumofficial
Please go to @irisalexandrov to see some amazing rainclouds and turquoise water and to @alexandrovklumofficial to briefly meet the dolphins that circled our boat !this afternoon! #shotwithmyphone #saveourseas #saveouroceans #protectbiodiversity #oceanswithoutborders #privilege #livingthedream #mattiasklum #nikonambassadors #friendsofvamizi

Two African Wild dogs working on securing their common future! One of my favorite top predators photographed together with @ansgarklumphotos and in Selous, Tanzania.
Among the best hunters in Africa, wild dogs (or painted dogs) have a higher kill rate than lions and can take down antelope that weigh as much as 225 kilos (500 pounds). They are notorious for a grisly efficiency that has made some people fear and hate them, if not shoot them on sight. This beautiful apex predator is important in its ecosystem and needs to be respected and protected! African wild dogs hunt in successful cooperative packs of 6 to 24 animals. Larger packs were more common before the dogs became endangered. Photographed in Phinda Private Game Reserve, South Africa. This very relaxed female cheetah and her cub gave me and @irisalexandrov an unforgettable experience. Remarkably beautiful, lightning fast and so vulnerable all at the same time. The world’s fastest land mammal is racing toward extinction, with the latest cheetah census suggesting that the big cats, which are already few in number, may decline by an additional 53 percent over the next 15 years. In my field you end up developing some skills handling logistics and travel. If you don’t plan your workflow, travels and expeditions professionally you lose so much momentum and so many opportunities to actually get what you need artistically. With a solid travel plan, you can focus on the experience ahead.

A hippo in a typical threat display towards a rival in Phinda Private Game Reserve, South Africa. Hippos are known to be a bit grumpy, but if you read their behavior and play your cards right it usually works really well. It takes confidence to get this close. Hippos move with great ease in water, "swimming" by kicking their hind feet or simply walking on the bottom. They are well-adapted to an aquatic lifestyle, with small ears, eyes and nostrils set at the top of the head. Their senses are super keen even when submerged in water. By closing its ears and nostrils, the adult can stay under water for as long as six minutes. It's no secret that hippos love water, which is why the Greeks named them the "river horse." Hippos can spend more than 16 hours a day submerged in rivers and lakes to keep their massive bodies cool under the hot African sun. The black market’s insatiable demand for ivory has turned poachers’ attention away from well-protected elephants to more vulnerable hippos! Don't buy exotic animal souvenirs!!

I want to celebrate #worldwildlifeday by posting one of my favorite predators!!
The leopard is so strong and comfortable in trees that it often hauls its kills into the branches. By dragging the bodies of large animals aloft it hopes to keep them safe from scavengers such as hyenas.
Leopards are also successful nocturnal predators that stalk antelope, deer, and pigs by stealthy movements in tall grass or wooded areas. Saving the illusive leopard and its habitat is a smart strategy to secure long term water supply and other ecosystem services for mankind! It's all connected! I photographed this male in Selous, Tanzania with @ansgarklumphotos and . Some insanely beautiful Caribbean reef sharks passing inches away from my camera in the Bahamas. These sharks prefer shallow waters with a maximum depth of 35 meters and tend to inhabit coral reefs and ocean bottoms near the continental and insular shelves. Aggregations of Caribbean reef sharks are highly vulnerable to being fished out; a single longline could decimate an entire population. There are still about 400 species of shark in the world's oceans but at least
250 000 sharks are killed every day(!) for the finning- and shark liver oil industry etc. Many species are now on the brink! By ridding the oceans of the sharks we destabilize resilient and strong ecosystems that truly support life as we know it! We depend on nature to function! #sharks #protect #biodiversity #mattiasklum #nikonambassadors #artistduoalexandrovklum #protectbiodiversity @natgeo @thephotosociety @mattiasklumcollection @natgeotravel @alexandrovklumofficial

Staying cool! A Burchell's zebra’s stripy coat is thought to disperse more than 70 per cent of incoming heat, preventing the animal from overheating in the South African sun. The elegant stripes are also known to help camouflage the animal in long grass, and distract lions and other predators. Recent research also shows that a zebra's stripes may have evolved to keep biting insects at bay - the monochrome pattern seems to throw off the visual systems of flies.
On top of this, a zebra's stripes act like a fingerprint - each individual’s pattern is unique. Foals recognise their mothers by the pattern of their stripes, as well as by scent and call.
The Burchell's Zebra in Thanda, South Africa is the most common across the African continent and has been classified into seven sub-species across its range. After weeks of tracking the asiatic lions on foot, I managed to sneak up on this mating couple (without interupting their activity). Most people think of lions as strictly African predators, but only because they’ve been killed off almost everywhere else.
Ten thousand years ago lions spanned vast sections of the globe, and so did people and as we multiplied and got organized we put tremendous pressure on competitors at the top of the food chain. Now lions hold only a small fraction of their former habitat, and Asiatic lions, a subspecies that split from African lions perhaps 100,000 years ago, hang on to an almost impossibly small slice of their former domain. Go to @irisalexandrov to meet Inzaghi, our own relaxed little feline predator! #asiaticlion #protectbiodiversity #girforest #india #throwback #nikonambassadors #saveourlions #artistduoalexandrovklum @natgeo @thephotosociety @mattiasklumcollection @irisalexandrov @alexandrovklumofficial @natgeotravel
