In the past movember for me has mainly been an opportunity to grow some facial hair and raise a few bob for some worthy charities.
This year however it has been much closer to home, with my father having been diagnosed with prostate cancer earlier this year.
Dad could have easily become another statistic, having received relatively clear readings from his regular PSA tests however being a staunch believer in a second opinion dad obtained the much reviled 'finger test' which alluded to a possible issue - which ended up turning into prostate cancer and subsequent treatment. Fortunately for us, dad - the quiet achiever - navigated this challenge with grace, even notching up 1 million steps in the 3 months leading up to his operation. All the hard work has paid off with dads operation going fabulously and recent tests showing positive results.
I think the scary thing for me was that before dad was diagnosed, he was one of only two men in a group of male friends who had not had prostate cancer or similar, that's a shockingly scary statistic.
As such I have again been growing the facial hair, however this year my reasons for raising awareness for men's health will be much closer to home and I urge you all to get out and support your friends, family and loved ones. Link in bio if you want to donate #staynourished
