K9 Neko Apprehends Suspect Who Fled Crash After a Pursuit in Avon
.
On January 10th just after midnight, Trooper Kevin Tufts of the State Police Milton Barracks attempted to stop a vehicle Route 24 in Avon. The vehicle failed to stop and exited the highway. For safety reasons, Trooper Tufts terminated the pursuit. Shortly thereafter, a passerby reported to Trooper Tufts that a vehicle just crashed into a parked car further down the road. On arrival, the homeowner stated that the operator fled on foot and was able to provide troopers with a direction of flight and a detailed description. Trooper Brian McKenna of the K9 Unit responded to assist and deployed K9 Bruno on a track. Bruno tracked through yards and woods but lost the scent in a crane yard. Trooper Dan Purtell also of the K9 Unit responded and deployed K9 Neko on a scout on the opposite side of the street from the crane yard. Neko acquired a scent and began tracking up a side street. The track then entered a yard and into woods. The team tracked for over a mile through woods in deep snow and pucker brush. At one point, the team fell through ice into a stream but continued tracking. The team eventually tracked out of the woods and up a dead end street. Neko tracked across and intersection and down to the end of another dead end street. Neko tracked down a long driveway to a large garage and would not leave the garage. Trooper Tufts noticed one of the doors was unlocked and when Neko entered, he showed a proximity alert by barking and whining. Trooper Purtell made several K9 commands for the suspect to surrender and show himself but there was no response. The team moved further into the garage through equipment, to a half wall where Trooper Purtell observed the suspect hiding and not showing his hands at the rear of the garage. Several more commands were issued but the suspect refused to come out. Neko was released, climbing over the equipment and jumping the wall. Neko apprehended the suspect who then struck Neko several times. Troopers Tufts and Purtell took the suspect into custody. He was transported to the hospital and later booked at the Milton Barracks.
