Gather round y’all, we have a new neighbor! There is a new female owned and focused art space opening in Fishtown this summer called The Common Room. Stop by tomorrow (tuesday) night and meet the owners and some of the featured artists, and even check out their work in this pop up gallery showing. There will be a silent auction type of thing and also you can drink delicious sour beers from Highway Manor and Dogfish Head breweries and the money will all go to support the artists and their new space.

In a world where the arts are increasingly de-legitimized and defunded, where women continue to battle inequality and injustice, and where community proves essential to our enduring well-being, The Common Room hopes to be a hub for creative, women-driven art and events. They will partner with community members and organizations to provide a safe, inclusive environment that supports all women in their creative expression. Specifically, they will have a storefront that features local, woman-made art and wares, in an effort to provide less established artists with visibility, as well as financial solvency. They will also offer several community writing and art workshops in an effort to connect artists across different mediums, broadening not only their abilities, but also expanding their networks.

FREE LOCAL WHISKEY with @eightoaksdistillery #MarthaMondays 6/26 6-8pm . . .

A true grain to glass operation, the good people of 8 oaks are trying to create an authentic Lehigh Valley distillery where every part of the process is done on their own farm or by their neighbors.  I remember how excited we were when we first met Chad Butters. He is an amazing individual who runs a farm and a distillery. So there is true gradient to the term local when it comes to spirits. Some distilleries are buying a neutral grain spirit and flavoring it and releasing it as their own. Others purchase finished whiskey and put a new label on it and sell it as their own. At 8 Oaks they make everything. They grow their own hard red winter wheat to make vodka and gin. They get apples from their neighbors farm for their applejack. We asked if they were doing whiskey and they said yes but it won’t be ready for awhile. They didn’t want to release a white whiskey and they didn’t want to sell someone else’s product while their own whiskey aged. So they just didn’t have whiskey, until now. The Rye was released a few months ago and we love it.  The bourbon is just now being released and we’re very impressed with that too. . .

Eight Oaks is the most legit local distillery. There i said it. I really don’t like to play favorites but these guys are making the huge effort to do everything super, super properly. A Real deal farm to glass type of thing located in New Tripoli, PA. Their latest release is a bourbon where they grew all the ingredients on their own farm, and malted, milled, distilled and barrel aged the whiskey there as well. A mash bill of 60% non-GMO corn, 20% red wheat, and 20% rye creates a soft, smooth, light bodied, grain forward bourbon with lovely notes of nutmeg and spice. It’s a crowning achievement that will only get better and better as the years go by. .

They make handcrafted kombucha with unique and seasonal locally sourced ingredients. Pictured above is their ‘Rooted’ kombucha, a collaboration with our friends from the Philly Foodworks CSA, which features beets and carrots from the Honey Brook Harvest Collective in Lancaster and ginger and mint from Heritage Farm in West Philly. Add to that Inspired Brews amazing house kombucha culture and you have a bright and refreshing beverage is as flavorful as it is beautiful. .

They are bringing a little piece of the shore to you tonight as they offer a menu of Aquatic themed goodies like salmon burgers, potato and crab salad, fresh clam chowder, and my favorite, vegan Jonny cakes. In case you are not already familiar with them, Stockyard’s mission is to be a staple in the Spring Garden neighborhood for high quality sustainable food at reasonable prices. They source ingredients from local farms for their seasonal menus and showcase fine dining techniques in a laid back atmosphere. They aim to reduce waste by creating daily specials utilizing off cuts from whole animals and seasonal produce. Please come out and try their amazing food.

Beverage wise, super star guest bartender Nate Churchill will be finding some new and exciting ways to quench your powerful thirst tonight with a few of his favorite long and tall ultra refreshing cocktails like this juneberry collins or his jaguar shark manhattan. This book is meant to help those artists find ways to produce their work even when they are feeling overrun by everyday life.

Just a short and easy train ride out of the city, Mountain Laurel Spirits, makers of Dad’s Hat Rye whiskey, has single handedly resurrected traditional the Pennsylvania (Monongahela style) rye whiskey scene. Through the use of an 80% rye mash bill (much higher than the typical kentucky rye whiskey), long slow fermentation, and lots of smaller new oak barrels, they have created a deliciously spicy, grassy, bright, and super unique whiskey that both honors the past and yet also sets the stage for a very bright future (they just released an incredible 4 year old straight rye!!!) .
