Epidendrum Hybrid & Friends | In Full Water Culture
Last Spring, I came across an interesting orchid group in another social media platform. The topic on this group mainly revolved around growing orchids in "Full Water Culture" (FWC) and "Semi Water Culture" (SWC) which are something I've never heard prior. Quick factoid: My Mother was an avid orchid collector and grower so I've been exposed to orchids as far as I can remember but I digress. But yes, this "new way" of growing 'chids definitely peaked my interest at the time. I was also really attracted to it because the members orchids were looking so great in their posts to the group. I also kept reading that "they can constantly bloom all year long" which definitely sounded like an added bonus. So at around the same time last Spring, I thought I'd give it a go. I mean what can go wrong, right?!
I've chosen most of my Phalaenopsis as the first trial; Phal's are the most common breed of orchids they are showing off on that group. I also just love the aesthetics of them in clear glass vases. I got more daring and tried different breeds of 'chids that I know would love lots of water like this currently blooming Epidendrum hybrid that you see in this post...Let's fast forward to this Spring...
...Unfortunately, this way of growing orchids - in my opinion, is not quite healthy and sustainable for these plants. I've lost all 8 of my Phals from FWC since last Spring. I tossed out 2 of them just recently bec they just simply looked horrendous and unhealthy. I'd rather purchase a new healthy one than to dedicate my limited time and resources on a struggling plant that can potentially spread disease to my other houseplants.
So in my opinion, and let this be a forewarning to those who are thinking of doing it too, that I really can NOT recommend it. Grow them pretty 'chids as how they should be growing in the wild. Mimick their natural environments and they should be as happy or even happier if you are consistent w/ their care. Hopefully you can learn from my mistakes, plant-friends! Happy Hump Day! 🤗
