Obsessive. Dedicated. Focused. Selfish; the founders characteristics. I've struggled with the fact I've devoted all my time to my business to serve football fans but not made time to apply my experience and energy to help those less fortunate. Tonight that changed. I joined @imentororg . One call per week and one meeting per month is considered consistent memtorship for ambitious but disadvantaged school kids in Brooklyn and the Bronx. It's the least I can do. They seek more male mentors so if you have time and the will, sign up. #founders#imentor#hope#opportunity#mentor#inspire#teach#startuplife#opportunity#relationships
Running over the Manhattan Bridge tonight I stopped to appreciate how much I value living in this great city. Once home and relaxing over a beer I had a call with great friend who recently launched an artisanal home decor ecommerce site @justtwoquestions. As we shared our entrepreneurial challenges, and frustrations we both agreed that a persistent focus on delivering value to our users is daily practice. Saying over a beer is easy, staying focused on that is less so. But no one ever said this would be easy.
I think it's fair to say most of us spend our time chasing our goals, aims and ambitions. Today I heard an interview with Tony Robbins where he said “Trade your expectations for appreciation and your whole world changes in an instant.” It's an interesting pivot. Appreciate the journey and let the destination take care of itself. Maybe we all need to realign our use of time.
When I saw this painting by Sol LeWitt it made me think about the demands of startup founders, but also anyone navigating modem living. We need structure. We need to follow a path but need to be adaptable to change. We need to be multi-layered. We need to be colourful. All this in balance creates a sense of freedom. Today I heard @erikwahl talk about structure creating freedom and this painting came to mind and it captures that sense of structure but adaptability and flexibility we need to navigate our world. Get the face paints out!
