All, The Marion-Perry County Bicentennial Committee, the City of Marion, and Main Street Marion invite you to attend Jazz on the Square on Saturday, April 21st from 2:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. This event is FREE to the public and will include live music, storytelling, a special art gallery opening, fun kids’ activities, along with food and local vendors. All are encouraged to come down, bring a lawn chair, and enjoy downtown Marion on our historic courthouse square. Many cadet organizations will be featured during the day’s festivities, as well as, providing support for the event. Below are some highlights for the day:
Opening Ceremony [2 pm]: The MMI Color Guard will begin the ceremony with the raising of the Colors.
MMI Concert Band [2:30 pm]: Under the direction of COL Deborra Street, the incredibly talented MMI Band will perform an open-air concert on the courthouse steps! This is a must see event as they will perform classic hits from yesteryear that will make you want to tap your toes or get out of your seat and dance!
Squared Away [4:15 pm]: The Marion Military Institute Jazz Combo, Squared Away, was formed in the Fall of 2017 for Marion’s first Jazz on the Square. This year the combo will incorporate a combination of both jazz standards and R&B hits. The combo line-up is composed of Austin Meeks (Huntsville, AL) on trumpet, Ke’Undra Cox (Eutaw, AL) on alto sax, Gideon Gadson (NYC, NY) on vocals, Angela Vantreese (Houston, TX) on keys, Nick Taylor (Leeds, AL) on bass, and Carlos Hernandez (Honduras) on drums.
Magic City Smooth Jazz [6:30 pm]: The main event of the evening will be the smooth sounds of Dwight Houston & On Purpose https://www.magiccitysmoothjazz.com/home
Children’s Activities [All day]: There will be activities for the children including face painting and an inflatable slide!
Marion Welcome Center Open [All day]: Stop by the new Welcome Center and learn more about Historic Marion, located on the corner of Washington and Jackson Street.
