Spent last Friday morning cleaning up Mertasari beach, Sanur, with @breitling and their Surfers Squad, and @oceanconservancy team. While the campaign against single use plastic like plastic straws, bottles, bags, utensils, and food wrappers are widespread nowadays, the stuff I found at the beach sent a bit of a shockwave. Aside from those obvious ones I stated, I found pens, pieces or components from toys, styrofoams, and basketloads of ciggie butts. We live with plastic and we are more dependent to this material more than we even realize, and more than I’d like to acknowledge, thanks to mass consumerism. All these trash will eventually go into our bodies, via the seafood we eat. Fact: the average person eats 70.000 microplastics every year.
Cleaning up the beach is an important act but it doesn’t solve the real issue. While I agree wholeheartedly that we need to contribute and take action individually to address this issue, by practicing mindful and conscious consumption, leaning towards less/zero waste lifestyle, on a macro level the government and leaders of the world should do their work in stopping the chain from top.
What we can do on a daily basis: Reduce, Refuse, Reuse, Recycle, Remove ♻️
