They might only have a brain the size of a peanut, but a chickens knows everything she needs to know to be a succesful chicken. All we have to do is provide them with the right environment and they will thrive. There are billions of them in this world and most of them live miserable circumstances for the duration of their entire lives ( which I hope for their sake will be short ). They are our most abused farm animal and deserve so much better. So it makes me even more happy that my hens can live their lives outside without even a whisper of a factory farm barn. #chicken#chickens#chickensofinstagram#hen#hens#hoenders#kip#kippen#boerderij#biologisch#organic#organicfarm#farming#farmlife#raisedright#livestock#poultry#chef#farmlife#eatlocal#farmfresh#restaurant#iamamodernfarmer#foodie#foodblogger#food

So my friend @cartoon.called.life held an event called “winter bunny dance” which was so much fun, good music and drinks and lots of bunny merch, which if you haven’t already checked it out, you sure should because it is so cool. (Link in his bio). But the best thing is that it was held at a venue that during the day is used as a lunchroom. And they happened to sell plants there as well at very reasonable prices I must say. So being the plantgeek that I am, I totally caved and bought a basket full of plants✌🏻😁. You know, some people bring home dates, I bring home plants. What are ya gonna do about it? 🤷🏼‍♂️ The girls behind the counter loved it so much that they wanted to take a pic and I kinda like it too and so here it is. 😋 #boyswithplants#localstore#antwerpen#antwerp#gay#gayguy#gayswithplants#guyswithplants#botany#plant#plants#planten#plantgeek#plantnerd#beardedgay#beard#barba#baard#bunny#cartooncalledlife#urbanjungle#greenthumb

Big girls you are beautiful!
Gyöngyi is one of the most docile sows I have. She’s always up for cuddles and loves attention. In the short time she’s been on my farm she managed to steal a special place in my heart. #gyöngyi#mangalitza#mangalica#mangalitsa#vörösmangalica#szalonta#pig#lardpig#praisethelard#lard#pigfarmer#pasturedpork#pastureraised#iamamodernfarmer#farmraised#farmlifebestlife#gyo#agriculture#permaculture#eatlocal#localfood#chef#restaurant#food#goodfood#foodie#foodblogger

I processed four lambs today and in the evening the customers that placed an order came and picked up their meat. This is a time when I get to talk to the people who buy products that I put blood sweat and tears in to produce. The customers that, by buying from me, make it possible for me to farm like this. I love these days because often I find that people love to learn about the history of their food and I am more than happy to tell them about it. They made a descision to come and buy my meat and so for them it is a day to think about the who, what, when and how the food they eat got to their fridges and in the end, onto their plate. Crazy thing though is that you’d be hard pressed to find any other activity that each of us does at least three times a day, yet are so out of the loop of what it is we are partaking in. We’ve created a food system, internationally, that allows us to be so absent in many of the processes, actually all of them except for the purchasing. (YES, breeding, raising, processing, delivering and starting again is an amazing process with a crazy ammount of steps. ) I honestly think though, that there are many people that enjoy not having to add “think about food” to their list of things to think through each day. It’s become mindless for the consumer. But, is this really that great of a thing? (That’s rhetorical). Reality is, our farming generation, the little guys like me who who skip all the conventional ways of growing, processing and selling, are a small minority at this point. We feed a micro percent compared to the big guys of the industrial food chain. Thankfully this is changing though. Good news is, that rather than being a faceless system, more often than not we WANT you to see our faces. To know our stories and to keep us accountable. Most of us small farmers actually farm the way we do because we love the sense of community it brings. We love inviting people in to get to know our operations we call the farm. It really does take you deeper than surface level. We are only as strong as our roots, our customers. (Continued in comments)

Yesterday when I was at the botanical gardens in Leiden, @rogiervanvugt was so kind to give me two branches of the Five-finger tree (Pseudopanax arboreus), also known as whauwhaupaku or puahou in Te Reo Māori. Five-finger is one of the most common trees in New Zealand. It is fast-growing and often found in regenerating forest. Its leaves consist of five to seven leaflets, arranged like fingers around a central stalk (this is known as a palmate arrangement). The leaflets are toothed and leathery. They are part of the ivy family which is apparent when you have a close look at them. In winter five-finger produces clusters of purple flowers at the tips of its branches. Purple-black berries ripen in summer. I hope that I can propagate these shoots into a few five-finger bushes which I can add to my other New Zealand tree and bush collection so I always have a bit of Aotearoa closeby. ☺️ (last pic I took from mr. Google-pants so you all could see what it looks like as a mature bush) #fivefinger#fivefingertree#fivefingerbush#whauwhaupaku#puahou#pseudopanax#pseudopanaxarboreus#vijfvingerboom#tree#propagation#nz#newzealand#nznative#newzealandnative#aotearoa#plant#plantlovers#garden#gyo#greenthumb#greenfingers#hortusbotanicus#hortusbitanucusleiden#plantnerd#plantgeek#boyswithplants

Pinnekjøt! A traditional Norwegian Christmas dish. It is basically salted lamb with mashed kohlrabi/carrot, a boiled potato and sausage, with some parsley sprinkled on top. Christopher cooked this for me yesterday evening. What a week it has been. Beautiful moments, beautiful landscapes and beautiful people. It is good. ♥️#pinnekjøt#food#traditionalfood#goodtimes#memories#norway#norwegian#lamb#saltedlamb#traditions#goodfood#homemade#homestead#homesteading#homesteader#sausage#potato#kohlrabi#carrot#parsley

These guys will be off to the slaughterhouse next week. They have been on pasture all their lives and the only extra thing they ever got was hay.... which is dried grass. They could grow at their own pace and are now ready for the final step in their lives. If you haven’t ordered some lamb yet, you still can! 😉 #lamb#grassfed#grassfedlamb#pasturedlamb#pastured#pastureraised#grass#grassfarmer#hay#sheep#sheepfarmer#sheepfarm#bontschaap#heritagebreed#rarebreed#meat#butcher#chef#farming#homestead#homesteading#homesteader#livestock
