DATA : This is what the beginning of a conflict data mapping project looks like. Pictured here is a map of the chemical waste travelling & settling from the oil fires set by ISIS in July 2016 in the Qayyarah region and Tigris river basin - south of Mosul, Iraq. You can also see the appearance of the Qayyarah Airstrip refugee camp (blue dot) halfway through this data set; which means that we have measured the chemical exposure impact in the atmosphere & landscape for residents, in relation to arrival date & time. About 9-16 million lines of data can be drawn out of a project data set like this, which is pretty amazing to imagine.
This project is made in collaboration with the brilliant @officeofotherspaces . And while the data gathering and processing can be relatively quick, now we hit the slow part. Firstly, sets and methods like ours will go for publication and review as an academic paper - and then, into development as one of my artworks.
